The purpose of this project is for you 1. to practice collecting and analyzing relevant community
assessment data to identify nutrition-related problems and 2. to practice writing mini-literature reviews on
modifiable antecedents (i.e. contributing factors) of nutrition problems and existing programs that address
nutrition problems.
Learning Outcomes. Upon completion of this assignment, you will have demonstrated the ability to:
locate, interpret, evaluate and use relevant professional literature to make ethical evidence-based
practice decisions;
apply knowledge of the role of the environment, food, nutrition, and lifestyle choices to examine
programs to promote health and/or nutrition status in a selected community; and
demonstrate effective and professional written communication.
GETTING STARTED
You have been assigned a rural Texas county (Angelina County, Texas) to identify a nutrition-related problem. Once the nutrition problem is identified, you will research modifiable antecedents to the nutrition problem and existing community-based programs that address this problem. Note: you must identify a true nutrition related problem; lack of physical activity or physical activity-based programs are not an appropriate problem for this project.
1. The first step of this assignment is to collect and analyze relevant secondary data about your county
to identify a nutrition-related problem. A detailed assessment of the community will include a variety
of data, including geographic, demographic (e.g. age and gender distribution, education, income,
workforce/labor characteristics), access to resources (e.g. healthcare, opportunities for physical
activity, food access (quantity and quality)), and other considerations to understand the population,
who are a potential audience for intervention.
On the Class Research Guide, you will find links to sources of existing health and nutrition statistics to assist the assessment process. Note: this is not an
exhaustive list of datasets that you may use to support your assessment, but this is a starting point.
There may be other sources that can assist; however, these sources should be credible, such as data
collected and reported by a government or community organization. Commercial web sites (e.g.
.coms) generally dont meet these criteria. In addition, there are resources on the assessment
process in the assignment folder in eCampus (The Vermont Department of Health Community
Assessment Toolkit and The University of Kansas Community Assessment Toolbox). Sources of
assessment data should be cited in text and in your references list. Most often, these will be
formatted as web sites.
2. Once you have identified a nutrition-related problem, then you will research scholarly literature to
understand the nutrition problem and its modifiable antecedents (i.e. contributing factors). You must
include at least 4 scholarly sources from peer-reviewed journals for this part of the project. Note:
when searching for relevant literature, the research does not have to have been conducted in your
county; most likely it wont have been. But, it should be relevant in terms of the nutrition problem and
in a community/population similar to yours.
3. Finally, you will find and read three existing community-based interventions/programs that have been reported in research literature (i.e. peer-reviewed journals) that address your identified nutrition problem.
