Policies and Procedures

Policies are a type of plan from which goals can be set, action taken, and decisions made. Organizations usually have both organization level policies and also department level policies. Therefore, health services managers at all levels in an organization are involved with writing policies and procedures. Regardless of level, each must be consistent with the mission, vision, and values of the organization. An organization or department should have a policy manual. Most of the time these are found on an intranet; we rarely see the traditional paper manual any more.

Procedures are another type of plan. Procedures are a series of steps to accomplish a specific task. They are plans for action. Procedures are usually developed for repetitive tasks to give it uniformity and for training purposes. Each step in a procedure should be numbered. Careful attention should be given to the writing of the steps to ensure that each is clear and brief. Also, each step should begin with an action word.

Organizations most often have a standard format, heading section, and numbering system for the development of policies and procedures. These should all be adhered to for consistency purposes. Both policies and procedures should also be reviewed regularly to ensure that they are kept up-to-date. To help with this process, always include a “date written” and a “date revised” for each.

Conduct research to view examples of policies and procedures. It is best if these are from health care organizations, but any examples will suffice. Make note of how each of these is written and the types of things that are included. This will help you to determine what sections and information to include in your own document.

Through experience and/or research, you will need to be familiar with the area or process that you choose. Examples might include the following: Confidentiality, Email Usage, Faxing, Sexual Harassment, Patient Registration, or other topic of your choice.

Compose a policy or a procedure for the fictional organization -healthcare facility. Keep in mind that sometimes a policy and procedure might be combined into a single document. You may write a policy or procedure for the organization as a whole or one for a specific department.

You are a member of a recently formed committee to deal with numerous complaints against police and correction officers in your town and are asked to determine if there is merit to these allegations and develop a protocol to address the current problem and prevent these practices from occurring in the future. The allegations are a vast amount that focuses on brutality toward citizens and inmates. There are signs that the entire police and correctional system is suffering of corruption activity, specifically from supervisory and upper-management positions. You have witnesses of police attacks on teenagers and family members that have seen their loved one with bruised bodies from the attacks suffered in the different prisons.

When the committee is provided the report that was produced through the interviewing of all inmates through the correctional system, an overwhelming 90% of inmates declared they were brutally battered for such reasons as not eating lunch under their 30-second rule or the way the inmate walked, which many inmates stated that correction officers would make it clear to them that they were walking like girls and needed an old fashion whooping.

When the committee took a comprehensive look at police complaints, they were provided pictures that were sent in by citizens that presented police officers using weapons in their assaults of young teenagers that were alleged gang members. There was some audio provided to you and the committee of the voices of police officers speaking to the police chief about a specific crime-ridden area, in which they were instructed to make an example of anyone suspicious walking after 11:00 p.m.

This group project is an assignment where you will be assigned a group or choose your group, depending on your instructor. The building is planned to house 150 people. There will be 75 assisted-living apartments and 50 rooms for residents in long-term care; of these rooms, 25 will be single-occupancy, and the other 25 will be double occupancy.

Action Plan Components

Your action plan you must:

1. Create a Spiritual Assessment Questionnaire that includes a minimum of 10 questions.

a. Discussion each question detailing why the question is important, and what information will be gleaned from the client’s answer.

b. Explain how the answer will apply to a spiritual intervention and/or therapy plan.

2. Identity Needs of Individuals: The action plan should identify how to integrate spiritual and religious practices, therapeutic activities, and health care to address the needs of the following:
