Arson Investigation

You are a senior member of an arson investigation unit. You are being supported by newly assigned criminal investigators from a street crime unit, who do not have much experience in the investigation of arson crimes. These new investigators will be doing the interviewing of arson suspects. You have been asked by the agency director to provide a white paper for dissemination to the new investigators. The paper will contain the required components that differentiate arson from an accidental fire. Further, you must explain to the new investigators in the paper the various types of economic and psychological motives that exist, so they may best plan their interviews with the arson suspect.

In a white paper to the newly assigned investigators, please address the bulleted tasks listed below in the assignment guidelines. There are a number of arson investigator resources that are not found in academic journals that may be utilized as references in this assignment. It is critical that when making a statement of fact in your paper, you cite the reference you obtained the information from in the text of the paper and that the reference is included in your reference page.

Assignment Guidelines

Address the following in 7–9 pages:
Describe the elements of proof for an arson fire.
Identify and describe at least 2 distinct motives for individuals to commit arson. The motives you select should fall under 2 different categories listed below:
Social
Economic
Psychological
Provide a background of the type of person who is likely to commit arson for the motives you select.
Suggest to the investigators where they might develop leads on the suspect based on the type of arsonist he or she might be. Explain in detail.
If the investigators have the opportunity to search the residence and/or business of the suspect, what artifacts should they be aware of that would help them identify motives of the arsonist? Explain in detail.

The Assignment:

Identify the companies whose annual reports you are comparing and include the links in your paper.
Compare and contrast the information contained in the annual reports you were assigned.
Explain how the information contained in the annual reports relate to the image you have of the organization as a whole.
Explain how the financial statements, auditor’s opinion, and footnotes are similar and how they are different in effectively conveying the position of the organization.
Provide 2–3 clear and in-depth examples to justify your perspective, drawing upon information from the reports you reviewed.
Be sure to use citations and related reference materials as appropriate.

Either invent and describe a company, or describe a company for which you work. Then, you will describe a community outreach program that your company sponsors and runs as well as an annual event related directly to your community outreach program. The community outreach and event can be invented or currently in existence.

Specifically, describe the following:

Your business
This company can be any operation you wish, such as a microchip firm, small retail business, health care company, hospital, school, nonprofit organization, restaurant, or anything else, as long as it is a business that interests you and operates in a realistic context.
Your community outreach program
This program might help needy families, those serving in the military or supporting others that do, college students, people moving toward valuable vocational degrees, at-risk youth, people involved in environmental causes, or someone else deserving of assistance.
The event you sponsor and run for your outreach program (this must be an annual festival)
Choose your event. Be realistic and practical in this regard. Consider only useful, altruistic activities that serve a community in a sensible manner.

Write a 2-page paper that includes an explanation of the types of behaviors you observed in the two clients profiled in the media program. Assignment 2: LASA 1—Operant Conditioning and Superstitions

Many people believe that superstitions are absolutely true. This often causes them to believe and act in ways that are out of the norm either to avoid a negative outcome or to bring about a positive outcome. However, the origins of all superstitions lie in operant conditioning (for example, wearing the same shirt worn during a victory game to all future games in order to ensure victory).

In this assignment, you will examine the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the formation of a superstition.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the development of operant conditioning and its basic principles. Then, address the following:

Describe the historical antecedents of operant conditioning. What factors led to the rise of operant conditioning?
Describe the principles/concepts which can be applied to explain the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the development and maintenance of superstitions.
Brainstorm to come up with a number of superstitions you may have heard or read about. Using your knowledge and vocabulary of operant conditioning, choose one of these superstitions. Then, describe in detail, the thinking processes involved that resulted in the acquisition and perpetuation of this irrational belief.
Describe a specific aspect of the operant conditioning process that leads to these beliefs becoming so deeply ingrained and long standing in nature.
Explain whether a person can ever be rid of superstitions. What methods can be used to help such a person?
Interview a family member or friend to discover a superstition that he or she believes in. Explain the nature of the event that led to the formation of this superstition. Does this information fit with your understanding of how the operant conditioning process results in the development of superstitions? Why or why not?
