Topic 1: Policy Implications of Patient Safety Standards and Practices

Read the case study number one, Moving to a Common Core Interprofessional Patient Safety Curriculum on page 254 in Health Policy and Politics: A Nurse’s Guide , by Milstead. Why is it important that health professionals share a common understanding of patient safety standards and practices? What are the policy implications from accepting that “mistakes are normal and all human err”? How would you approach health care systems leaders or employers about changing employment policies related to punitive actions when errors occur?

Evaluate the effects of the global nursing shortage on health policy. How has the shortage affected the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals? Analyze how nursing ideas, values, and beliefs impact policy agenda. Identify when policy can dictate treatment options.

After reading these articles, consider the following:

The need for an organization to have a Disaster Recovery Plan.
How the attacks of September 11, 2001 affected Barclay’s Capital and Putman Investments.
Whether or not Barclay’s Capital and / or Putman Investments had a disaster recovery plan. If so, what were the parts of the plan that allowed each of them to continue operations? If not, what should a disaster recovery plan have included in order to continue operations?

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

Identify the steps an organization should take to recover from a disaster and resume the business operations to normal mode.
Suggest two (2) methods that organizations can use in order to mitigate the risk of data loss.
Suggest two (2) methods that organizations can use in order to minimize the impact on personnel after a disaster.
Examine both Barclay’s Capital’s and Putman Investments’ situations on September 11, 2001. Determine two (2) factors that contributed to a successful disaster recovery and two (2) factors that hindered a successful disaster recovery for each organization.
Use at least three (3) quality references in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Social Security Insurance

From your readings and research this week it should be apparent that many feel the future of Social Security is at risk. In addition to reading chapters seven and eight, I would like you to read the following article on “Why Raise the full retirement age?”

Respond to the three questions including explanations on your positions:

1. What are your thoughts about the future of Social Security?

2. Should future participants be allowed to invest SSN payments into other markets and retirement plans?

3. Should increasing the full retirement age be raised?

You are going to create a sample project describing the organizational structure of the agency or company for which you are planning the project. Describe as many of the organizational culture attributes as you can. List by name as many of the project executive, management, and team roles as you can identify. Be sure to assign roles to yourself as well. Discuss in this paper how you anticipate that the organizational structure, culture, and role assignments will help or hurt your ability to successfully plan this project. Describe the project life cycle model that is used in the organization, and explain why it is appropriate. Write a four-page summary of the project including all the elements listed in the instructions. At least two references must be used and one of them must be obtained from the CSU Online Library. Be sure to use APA format and cite your work. Your summary should be at least four pages in length and will include a title and reference page which are not included in the page count.
