Explain why you think Google decided to review their recognition program.

In 2012, the compensation group at Google embarked on an 18 month mission to create a variety of reward and recognition programs that met the specific needs of its workforce.

HR’s goal for its rewards-and-recognition programs was always to support employee innovation and performance. So the group engaged in a monumental task, using every communication vehicle available to solicit, gather and interpret employee and external feedback. It administered surveys, held focus groups, conducted academic research, perused U.S. studies, and interviewed and observed employees.

In the end, the company figured out what turned employees on and off in terms of rewards and recognition. It then launched (in the second half of 2013) a rewards-and-recognition platform housing two programs that employees not only support but can call their very own.

The company had been supporting four types of reward/recognition programs. Although they all still exist, two of them — Kudos, a peer-to-peer recognition program that lets employees send online thank-you notes to co-workers without going through an approval process, and Peer Bonus, whereby they can nominate their peers for $175 rewards — have been modified based on the compensation group’s findings.

A third reward/recognition program, the Spot-Bonus program, allows managers to award any employee who served on their project teams with a larger monetary award of their choice or noncash recognition, such as dinner for two.

In a 2-3 page report, prepared in APA style with at least two references, do the following:

  • Explain why you think Google decided to review their recognition program
  • Describe one recognition program they have in detail
  • Give your opinion as to whether or not you would appreciate this program

Compare and contrast the way that Marx and Weber describe life under the division of labor and the capitalist mode of production.

PART II Comparisons

Choose one of the three pairs of theorists below. Explain how their ideas compare with each other. What are the similarities or continuities? What are the differences? Are they compatible? You should demonstrate that you know what each concept is on its own and attempt to draw comparisons as best you can. Your answer should be about 500-600 words but it is most important than you take the time to formulate a thesis and back it up by making clear and concise comparisons in a well-organized manner.

D. Marx and Weber

Compare and contrast the way that Marx and Weber describe life under the division of labor and the capitalist mode of production. Compare how they both see it as a controlling power that subordinates people to its requirements. How similar are they? Are there any differences to how they see this issue? Look especially at how Marx discusses the “general formula for capital” in Capital and how Weber discusses rationalization and the iron cage at the end of The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.

E. Weber and Durkheim

Compare the ways that Weber and Durkheim discuss social stratification. Towards the end of his discussion of “Classes, Status Groups and Parties,” Weber addresses the way the division, grouping and inequality of people on the basis of their economic position in the market affects the social position of status groups, especially when discussing castes and privileges of social ranks. How do markets and individual competition affect the social privileges of status groups? How does this compare with Durkheim’s discussion of caste in the section on the “Forced Division of Labor”? How does caste conflict with the spontaneous distribution of people into occupations?

F. Durkheim and Marx

Both Marx and Durkheim discuss the relation of individual development to the development of the species as a whole through the development of the division of labor. They both agree that the division of labor confers benefits on the species. They may differ on some of the details. Compare and contrast Marx’s and Durkheim’s discussion of the fate of individual and the species as it relates to the division of labor, specialization and the dangers of fragmentation. Look at Marx’s discussion of “Alienated Labor” (and perhaps some parts of the German Ideology) and Durkheim’s discussion in the “Anomic Division of Labor” and his “Conclusion” in The Division of Labor in Society. How do their views on specialization and human development differ?

What, according to H. Gene Blocker, are the most important historical sources for our contemporary conception of human rights?

Short Paper on Human Rights.

Our class’s final essay assignment requires you to reflect on the contemporary relevance of ancient codes, documents, and artifacts that contributed to the evolution of our modern conception of human rights. Your essay should answer these questions:

What, according to H. Gene Blocker, are the most important historical sources for our contemporary conception of human rights?
To what extent, if at all, can you identify in contemporary culture and government specific legacies of any of the ancient codes, documents, and artifacts we studied this week?

Please ensure that your essay addresses each component of both assigned questions and that your answer is well-organized, uses excellent, college-level prose, and makes judicious use of textual evidence. Your essay should be 600-900 words long

Analyze and critique the production, using theatrical terminology, not merely “liking or disliking” the play (do not turn in a rewritten version of the plot summary)

Similar to film and music reviews which analyze and critique the whole work, a review of a play or musical should also critique the production as a whole, in addition to its variety of elements.  The purpose of a review is to provide a potential audience with an unbiased opinion of the production, supported by facts.

This last written assignment requires you to attend one UT Department of Theatre and Film production this semester — HENRY V or THE LARAMIE PROJECT.  The assignment is to:

  • analyze and critique the production, using theatrical terminology, not merely “liking or disliking” the play (do not turn in a rewritten version of the plot summary)

Like any written essay, a theatre review should contain an introduction, body and conclusion.  Elements that could be discussed in this review (but are not limited by) include:

  • introductory material (name of the play or production, playwright, performance location, date)
  • the production’s themes and/or playwright’s voice (what he/she was trying to say)
  • expected audience response
  • visual elements (set design, costumes, lighting, sound and/or music) and how they support (or don’t support) the production
  • artists’ performances (actors and their roles, director, designers), including their honesty/believability
  • successful moments in the play vs. unclear ones
  • conclusion or overall impression of the production

In general, your assignment should be typed and proofread, at least 3-4 pages in length.  Think creativity, originality (such as images, links, etc.) and presentational choices (such as Word,Powerpoint, Prezi, audio files, etc.).  Reviews are no longer just printed in newspapers or magazines, reviews are also found on television, radio and the internet.  Be careful of spelling, grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and MLA guidelines.  Remember to document any outside sources you use.  Early submissions are always accepted.

Locate an article that discusses a toxicant that affects a target organ or organ system that we have discussed thus far in this course. Write an Article Review, and relate the content of what you have learned in this course to the article and to your real life experiences. This paper should include a minimum of 500 words and must include at least two references outside of the textbook. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

write a persuasive essay on how organizations in the tax services industry can rethink their social strategy to gain competitive advantage.

Winer (2011) suggests an important feature of services is that because they are often distributed by people, their quality may be inconsistent at different points in time. Many services companies are seeking new methods to distinguish themselves from the competition. The Internet and information technology have provided robust, tangible opportunities for such differentiation.

Using the Nord, Paliszkiewicz and Koohang article in the readings and one additional source from the KU Library, write a persuasive essay on how organizations in the tax services industry can rethink their social strategy to gain competitive advantage.

Your essay should make use of explanation to demonstrate that one proposal is more reasonable than another idea. A persuasive essay tries to convince a reader to accept a definite point of view. Your paper should be 3 pages (not including title or reference sheet) of content and include in-text citations for references.
