Organizational Culture Analysis

Symbols of culture are called artifacts. Artifacts are the most visible and accessible level of culture. These include behaviors, stories, rituals (everyday practices that are repeated frequently), and symbols (e.g., company logos, company colors). For example, the president of a company volunteering at Habitat for Humanity is an artifact of culture. An example of symbols as an artifact of culture is Ashford University’s shield that serves as our logo and is printed on transcripts, diplomas and letterhead paper. Submit a two- to three-page paper (excluding the title and reference pages) describing the culture of either your current or past place of employment.

Your paper should provide examples of and address each of the following topics:

  • Observable artifacts
  • Espoused values (These are what organizational members say they value, like ethical practice.)
  • Enacted values (These are reflected in the way individuals actually behave.)

In addition, describe how each item listed above impacts the values and culture of the organization.

Your paper must use a minimum of two scholarly sources, in addition to the textbook. Your paper must also follow the APA Style guide.

Write down your original goal from CCC Part 1E.

Understanding Part 4

In Part 4, you are setting a goal for this project based on the outcome that you want to achieve. Knowing what you want the end result of this project to look like will help you to identify and implement the behaviors necessary to achieve that goal. Second, you are identifying a set of communication behaviors that will lead you to your goal. Be specific – what will you do or say that is different? This is what you need to include in 4E.

Reminder – It is not time to implement new behaviors yet – this week you are setting a goal and identifying the new communication behaviors that will help you to achieve that goal.

Be sure to submit all of the parts listed in the blue box below.

CCC Part 4: Goal Analysis

The interpersonal communication skill you selected earlier in this project is not yet stated in specific behavioral terms. For example, “I want to overcome shyness and meet new people,” gives you little direction. Some questions you might want to ask yourself are: What new people? Where will I meet them? When will I meet them? How many do I want to meet? How often? What will I say when I meet them? What do I typically do in these situations that I want to avoid?

4A. Copy your original goal from CCC Part 1E. Now look at your 4 Self Review goals that you wrote in Weeks 1 and 2. Read over your journal analysis of the CCC Part 2, and the positive models you want to emulate from Part 3 that you did in Weeks 2 and 3. Do you think your goal as written in Part 1E needs to be modified or changed?

4A1. Write down your original goal from CCC Part 1E.

4A2. Write down what you think your updated goal for this project should be now. It may be the same, slightly modified or totally different from Part 1E. For example:

“I want to be able to tell my family ‘no’ when I do not want to do something for them. I do not want to be taken advantage of and I want to stop feeling guilty when I do say ‘no.'”

4B. Jot down some communication behaviors that you associate with your goal. To arrive at this list, answer the following questions:

4B 1.What must a person be saying and/or doing for me to say that he/she has achieved the goal?

4B 2. Given a room full of people, what is the basis on which I will separate them into two classes: Those who have achieved the goal and those who have not?

4B 3. How will I recognize and measure goal achievement when I see it?

4C. Now, describe each behavior. Do this in a statement that identifies the manner (or extent) of the behavior that is required to achieve the goal. For example:

4C1, Behavior 1: “In order for me to achieve my goal of disciplining my daughter without becoming angry, I will wait until she has finished talking to ensure I hear her side of the story.”

4C2, Behavior 2: “In order for me to achieve my goal of disciplining my daughter without becoming angry, I will ask for clarification before I make a decision regarding discipline.”

Repeat this statement for each behavior on your list. This step helps you to establish the criteria by which you will measure your success in reaching the goal.

4D. Now, look at your behaviors again. Consider this: If someone else performed the behaviors you have outlined, would you be willing to say that person has achieved your goal? Can you answer “yes” to this question for each of the behaviors you listed above in Part 4C? If not, modify the descriptions of the behaviors until you can say, “YES.” The answer to Part 4D is YES or NO. Do this over until you can state YES as the answer for each of the behaviors you have listed in 4C above. Explain why these behaviors would exemplify the attainment of your goal.

4E. Conclude with a clearly identified statement of the communication behaviors you intend to implement to achieve your interpersonal communication goal. Be specific. What new people? Where will I meet them? When will I meet them? How many do I want to meet? How often? What will I say when I meet them? How will I say it? What do I typically do in these situations that I want to avoid?

Report for CCC Part 4:

In this section you are to work through four steps to arrive at a clear statement of the behavioral goals related to your interpersonal communication project. Use the process described in this week’s Course Project tab as a framework for this narrative, and include in Part 4 of your report the following items:

4A through 4D. Provide a detailed outline of your movement through these four steps.

4A. Restate your goal for this project:

4A 1. Write down your original goal from CCC Part 1E.

4A 2. Write down what you think your updated goal for this project should be now. It may be the same, slightly modified or totally different from Part 1E.

4A 3.Why is your goal the same as CCC Part 1E, or why did it need to be changed?

4B. Answer these questions:

4B 1.What must a person be saying and/or doing for me to say that he/she has achieved my goal?

4B 2. Given a room full of people, what is the basis on which I will separate them into two classes: Those who have achieved my goal and those who have not?

4B 3. How will I recognize and measure my goal achievement when I see it?

4C. State your goal in specific behavioral terms. What new people? Where will I meet them? When will I meet them? How many do I want to meet? How often? What will I say when I meet them? How will I say it? What do I typically do in these situations that I want to avoid?

4C 1.Behavior 1: “In order for me to achieve my goal of …, I will . . .

4C 2. Behavior 1: “In order for me to achieve my goal of …, I will . . .

4C 3. Behavior 1: “In order for me to achieve my goal of …, I will . . .

4D. YES or NO (Do this over until the answer is YES.) Explain why these behaviors would exemplify the attainment of your goal.

4E. Copy your goal from 4A2 and then add all your specific behaviors from 4C.Conclude with a clearly identified statement of the communication behaviors you intend to implement to achieve your interpersonal communication goal. Be specific

Write a paper which seeks to persuade me that your opinion is well-founded.

Persuasive Paper:

This is a longer paper (1650 word-count minimum) that finds inspiration in any idea about which you would like to persuade your readers.  It can be about, for example, any issue found in our TED Talks, or any issue that you learn about or think about through our class discussions.  The idea and purpose of this assignment is for you to:

  1. Find a topic of interest to you

  2. Research that topic

  3. Form your own opinion

  4. Write a paper which seeks to persuade me that your opinion is well-founded.  You will try to persuade me to see the issue as you do and to share your opinion.

This assignment will be more complex than the other assignments, requiring you to choose, define, refine, and research your topic.  You will be required to use reliable sources in your paper as you seek to persuade your reader, and cite these sources correctly.  In your paper you will be expected to:

  • clearly define and explain your viewpoint.

  • find available support from expert sources for your viewpoint.  (These must include at a minimum two (2) scholarly, academic sources and five (5) reputable news or government sources.)

  • write about what you find in a way which explains and defends your opinion.

As you can see, this paper will be the largest assignment for this class.  It will be in a more traditional format.  For example, it will have:

  • An introduction to your topic which will have your thesis (what you want to convince your reader of)

  • Body paragraphs which describe the topic and explain the evidence

  • A conclusion

  • A Works Cited page in MLA format which contains your sources, and these sources will be included and cited within your paper

We will discuss the sources that are valid for this research and paper,  as well as how I expect you to incorporate your findings in your paper.  This inquiry paper will be an opportunity to discuss theses, citing and citations, paraphrasing and quotations, and other elements commonly required in academic writing.  This writing assignment will also be submitted and peer commented upon through Google Docs.

This may seem to be much work, but it isn’t–especially if you begin now and work on it everyday.  Most importantly, choose a topic which is important to you.

Select and research a social issue based on the course readings or personal interest.

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Taking Action

In order to help resolve the social issue, you must take action. Identify your elected representative(s) and find their contact and e-mail addresses.

Write an advocacy letter regarding the piece of legislation and your support of or opposition to it.

The purpose of an advocacy letter is to support or oppose the legislation that affects a social issue of concern to you. This letter is a way for representatives to stay in touch with the constituents they represent. While reviewing the information from the two merged companies, the HR Director has found out that each company has two different PTO policies.

PTO policies have become good tools for HR staff to use in terms of organizational incentives.

While reviewing the information from the two merged companies, the HR Director has found out that each company has two different PTO policies.

Company A has a PTO system in which employees are given 30 days of paid time off each year, which accumulates at the rate of 2.5 days a month. Under this policy, vacation and sick leave are all rolled into one paid leave and any absence whether scheduled, such as vacation, or unscheduled, such as sick leave, are taken from the accumulated leave the employee has earned.

Company B has a more traditional leave system in which employees are given 12 days of vacation, 10 days of sick leave and 10 holidays. The company is closed on those holidays. Vacation is accumulated at a day per month. Sick leave has an unlimited accumulation, but unlike vacation would not be paid out upon termination of employment.

Since the employees of the merged company will be working side by side, the HR Director has asked you to review the situation and make recommendations for a solution.

Instructions:

As an HR Director prepare a report addressing the following issues:

  • Identify any additional information you would need to recommend a solution, and explain where you would likely find that information.
  • Discuss any issues you would likely encounter if you were to merge the PTO system to a traditional leave system. Explain which issues would be difficult to solve and why.
  • Explain any problems you see with leaving the two systems in place, and identify which system would be assigned for new employees.
  • Make a recommendation for one common PTO system. Explain your system and why you think this system is the best system for the company.

Include two to three scholarly references in your response.

Write a five-to-seven-page memo to the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
