When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking.
The assignment is divided into two (2) parts.
For Part I of the assignment (due Week 2), you read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, reviewed the Procon.org Website in order to gather information, and engaged in prewriting to examine your thoughts.

Part II – Writing
Write at three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:
1. State your position on the topic you selected for Assignment 1.1.
2. Identify (3) three premises (reasons) from the Procon.org website that support your position and explain why you selected these specific reasons.
3. Explain your answers to the “believing” questions about the three (3) premises opposing your position from the Procon.org website.
4. Examine at least two (2) types of biases that you likely experienced as you evaluated the premises for and against your position.
5. Discuss the effects of your own enculturation or group identification that may have influenced your biases.
6. Discuss whether or not your thinking about the topic has changed after playing the “Believing Game,” even if your position on the issue has stayed the same.
The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.

Directions:
Write an autobiography of your mathematical experiences. Take one topic in your experience which gave you trouble (it does not necessarily need to give you trouble now) and research it and elaborate on it. B. Write a Thomistic Disputation (500 Words/ about 2 pages double-spaced with no heading); Up to 25 Points
Write an “article” in the style of Thomas Aquinas. Look over those passages in order to get a “feel” for his method. Your article may be on any question that interests you, but note that you must appeal to authorities such as the Bible or famous thinkers. Also, it must be a question upon which reasonable people could disagree. Crucially, it must contain each of the sections that Aquinas utilizes. That is, it should contain the following:
1. The title, in the form of a question, defines the problem.

Research
For all of these topics, I expect you to refer to sources beyond the stories or the novels themselves. Roth has talked and written extensively on his own work, and his writing and his interviews would be a valuable and easy-to-find source.
When you use information that you have read about Roth’s work, I do not want you to just spit it back; I want you to interact with what you have read. By the end of the course, I expect you to be smart enough about Roth that you can respond to what both he and others are saying about his writing.
You do not need to have a huge number of sources. As few as two sources might do the trick. I would much rather have you interact with two vital sources intelligently than have you jam six random sources into your paper.
Finally, if you use biographical information, use it sparingly. There is no reason to include a full biographical sketch of Roth in your paper. If you use information about his life, please just use the information that applies specifically to the main idea of your paper.

Now that you have examined your chosen topic using the three main categories of ethics (consequentialism, deontological ethics, and character ethics) you must choose one that you think works best with your thesis statement and the ethical topic you chose to write on from units 4-8. The vast majority of the unit 8 paper will be just rearranging excerpts from the essays you wrote in weeks 4-7, but the final paper must be a coherent and well-flowing research paper, and not a patchwork of paragraphs pasted together. Introduction: In the first paragraph or two you should provide a brief introduction to the issue that allows the reader to understand the topic and where you will be going with the discussion.
