How do we define and measure risks in financial projects?

After reading the 11th chapter of the text and doing some research on the internet regarding how a company makes capital decisions, you should be able to relate the process of raising capital and financing a corporation to project evaluation and decisions. Every manager wants tools which can be employed to maximize the chances of efficiently spending your capital are critical to all organizations. Sensitivity analysis and what-if scenarios help us understand the different outcomes of our decisions and be prepared for many eventualities. We need to quantify risk so we can understand what returns are required from our investors.

Ross, S., Westerfield, R., & Bradford, J. (2013). Fundamentals of corporate finance (10th ed.). New York, NY: McGraw-Hill/Irwin.

You should be able to explain and support your reactions to the following questions:

  • How do we define and measure risks in financial projects?
  • What are examples of uses for sensitivity analysis and what-if scenarios? Any examples from your work experience or research?
  • How do we define fixed and variable costs?
  • Give examples of the different types of costs in various applications from your experience or research.

Explain the attributes of the decision that make you believe that this is the ethical perspective of the company.

  1. Outline the company profile of the not for profit company you chose to analyze (consult the week #2 journal for the information you should include).  Explain the ethical dilemma that it faced or is currently facing.  Analyze the way that it responded to this ethical dilemma and outline the legal, social, or political outcomes that emerged after the actions were taken..
  2. Outline the company profile of the for profit company you chose to analyze (consult the week #2 journal for the information you should include).  Explain the ethical dilemma that it faced or is currently facing.  Analyze the way that it responded to this ethical dilemma and outline the legal, social, or political outcomes that emerged after the actions were taken.
  3. In part three of your paper, please provide your personal reflections on the ethical actions that were taken in relation to the problem.  Evaluate those actions from your own ethical standpoint.  Use these questions to inspire your analysis: Did the company respond in a morally responsible way?  Did the company respond in a morally irresponsible way?  Did the company create the ethical dilemma or was the dilemma the outcome of an unforeseen force?  Could the company have done more?  Who was responsible for the problem and how could it have been prevented?
    • Remember that when you analyze something you should present logical reasoning and factual evidence to support your position.  Do not merely answer these questions using simplistic yes and no answers.  Instead, you should always support your position with logical argumentation and evidence that explains why you believe what you believe.
  4. In part 4 of your paper please create a critique of the actions of these companies based on two of the philosophical theories that you studied earlier in the course (deontology, utilitarianism, egoism, virtue ethics, moral relativism).  Determine which moral theory the company appears to be abiding by in relation to this issue.  Explain the attributes of the decision that make you believe that this is the ethical perspective of the company.  If you agree with the ethical theory of the company, explain why this is the best ethical position on the issue.  If you do not, explain which ethical position would be better to utilize in this situation and why you believe that this position is better. Here are some sample questions to guide your thinking:
    • Which ethical theory did the company use in making its decision?  Was it the best?  Why or why not?
    • Which ethical theory should the company have used?  Why?
    • What is the ideal relationship between bad or suffering and profit?
    • What does it mean to run an ethical business?
    • What is the best way for a company to maintain its competitive edge and contribute to overall good or happiness in relation to its workers and customers?

Describe ONE of the central doctrines that is very DIFFERENT from Christianity.

1. At the start of the article, the author says “in Judaism, faith is less a matter of affirming a set of beliefs that of trust in God and fidelity to his law” (423), and he introduces the important term Halakha. Keeping in mind these words, find an example from the DAILY section on the handout A Partial Listing of Jewish Ritual Obligations and explain how Halakha may deeply influence a religious Jew’s daily life.

2. Read the section of the article called “Central Doctrines” (pp. 430-431). Describe ONE of the central doctrines that is very DIFFERENT from Christianity. Describe ONE of the central doctrines that seems to be SHARED with Christianity.

3. The section of the Judaism article “Sacred Symbols” describes at least six central symbols of Judaism. Describe one of them, and explain just what it symbolizes.

4. REVIEW the Judaism article, pp. 433-434 on Sacred Symbols – this section will help you with Dani’s description of her father’s religious practices. What memories of her father’s religious rituals bring Dani comfort? Why?

5. Is there a connection between Dani’s anxieties and her ability to believe in God?

What is a critical element that might be open for interpretation, and/or legal justification?

. It is important to know how to read a Law. ALL of the words that are included have a meaning, and ALL of the elements (basic descriptions) of the Crime (or Tort in Civil Law) are made up of such elements.

EXAMPLE: The Common Law description of the crime of Burglary was made up of the following elements: 1) a person 2) breaks and 3) enters the 4) dwelling house of 5) another person, 6) in the night time, to 7) commit a felony. For the person to be charged with the crime of Burglary, ALL 7 of these elements must be alleged in the charge. Then it will be the burden of the Prosecutor to prove ALL 7 of these elements of the Crime in Court, by legal and credible evidence, beyond a reasonable doubt.

How might you determine the following scenarios (is there a chargeable crime or not – if you are unsure of any of the elements, such as to what constitutes a “breaking”, you must determine it before you answer):

a) A person breaks the window of a dwelling house at 8:00 PM EST, enters the home of another, and steals a TV set. How have you concluded? What are two of the elements that might be open for interpretation and/or specific proof?

b) A person walks into the open door of a dwelling house at 11:00 PM EST, and steals a very valuable fur coat. How have you concluded? What is a critical element that might be open for interpretation, and/or legal justification?

c) A person is walking by a dwelling house at 11:00 PM EST, and sees a diamond ring on the bedstand under a night light. He goes home, gets his fishing rod, comes back and reaches the pole into the bedroom through an open window, and is able to steal the ring. How have you concluded? What is the critical element that might be open for legal interpretation, and/of legal justification

d) It is a cold winter night, and a homeless person breaks into and enters a dwelling house to get warm. While there, he also steals some food from the refigerator, and makes himself some coffee. How have you concluded? Why did you conclude this way?

e) A person drives his truck into a closed convenience store at 12:01 AM, for the purpose to steal the ATM, which he does. How have you concluded? Why did you conclude this way?

(The current Law has made this Crime far more easy to understand and prosecute.)

Does the protection of one domestic industry harm another? Please explain.

Does the protection of one domestic industry harm another? Please explain.
One of the reasons why the government protects domestic industries from foreign firms is because the firms offer products at lower costs. This gives them a strong advantage in the domestic market. While this can hurt domestic firms, consumers gain the advantage of cheaper prices. This advantage will repeat as the related, consuming firms sell their products to individual consumers and the lower costs of doing business will play a factor in their relationship with their employees (increase workers, increase wages or benefits, build new factories, etc). By erecting barriers to decrease foreign firms competitiveness, you take away all these benefits. In fact, there is a possibility that you will harm all of them if the protective domestic firm abuses the protections to squeeze more revenue from their consumers. For instance, say a domestic car costs $7000 but a foreign car cost $5000. The government puts in laws or policies that bump up the foreign car’s price to $8000 in order to make the domestic car the clear bargain. Now, maybe the domestic car company thinks that it can remain competitive at $7500. Now, the consumers face even more difficulty in stretching their dollar. Finally, there is the potential for political strife between the two countries. The foreign government could impose their own barriers that decrease sales from the domestic firms. At the end of the day, the winners are the protected firms and their employees while the losers are the foreign firms, unprotected related firms and employees, and potentially non-related firms who are victims of a trade war.
