Essay 1: Rhetorical AnalaysisChoose an issue relevant to you and find an article that addresses that issue. In addition to that article, you will need to find at least one source of information used by that article OR a another source that you can use to verify the claims made in that article. Ideally, you should try to find an academic source that is discussed by the popular source. For example, I might start with Rachel Quigley’s article, “Jab that could put a stop to stress,” and trace her source to Jonah Lehrer’s article “Under Pressure.” I would then use Lehrer’s article to find original, peer-reviewed studies by Robert Sapolsky through the TAMUCC library or Google Scholar.Once you have two sources that discuss the same specific issue, analyze their rhetorical structure and compare the ways they discuss the issue. Identify the premises and the different types of stasis on which your sources agree, and identify those in which they disagree. Identify unstated assumptions (warrants) that the sources make, and discuss where these diverge from the academic source. Identify why key facts, definitions, evaluations, or causal connections might be missing or misconstrued by those reading the popular-press article. Note when judgments about policy, evaluation, etc. are left out of the academic source.Your thesis should be an evaluation or causal argument that answers one of the following questions:Does the article make claims based on faulty or ambiguous evidence? What sources does the article use for support? Are these reliable sources?
Does the article oversimplify, miss the point, or get things wrong? Why?
What types of stasis does the article focus on? Does it need to further develop its explanation of some types of stasis? For example, an argument about policy might focus on causation but forget to establish that one outcome is more valuable than another.
What is the article’s rhetorical situation? Examine the rhetorical situation of the article and analyze the exigence, audience, and constraints.
