Describe the composition and function of saliva.

Research:
Saliva is an important component in eating. Without it, we wouldnt be able to swallow our food because it would be too dry. It aides in proper chewing by making a bolus, which is a ball of food created by chewing and mixing with saliva. It also helps in keeping the mouth clean and helps with speaking and spelling. Saliva is excreted by the salivary glands in the mouth. There are two types of glands and there are six glands in total. The two types of glands are located in different areas of the mouth and are Intrinsic and Extrinsic. The secretions from the Extrinsic glands are higher than the intrinsic glands. The secretions are a result of the brain receiving signals of sight or smell of food. Thats why we get the watery mouth syndrome. Intrinsic glands: small glands dispersed through the mouth. This type of gland includes the following glands-
-Lingual glands- in the tongue
-Labial glands- inside the lips
-Buccal glands- inside of the cheekExtrinsic glands: three pair of glands connected to oral cavity by ducts..This type of gland gland includes-
-parotid glands- under the skin anterior to the earlobe.
-Sub-mandibular glands- locates along the body of the mandible.
-Sublingual glands- located on the floor of the mouth. The composition of saliva is roughly 99% water and has a pH of 7 which is neutral. It contains enzymes and proteins that help fight bacteria such as Lysozyme and Immunoglobulin. It also contains electrolytes including sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate, and bicarbonate ions. Critical Thinking:
In all, saliva is an important part of our everyday life. Without it, we wouldnt be able to enjoy food, have a natural bacteria killer, or be able to speak/ spell easy. Something that we look past everyday is so important to our health and well being.
Connect the Dots:
Coming from someone who loves food, I found it very informational reading about this topic and learning more about how much saliva helps us in our everyday lives.
