This assignment focuses on production, that is, on producing a text (essay, digital story, Prezi, blog, etc.) that challenges dominant ideologies and influences within popular culture. You may choose a theme, topic or cultural text or practice and produce a critical reading of it. You see many such critical readings of various texts and practices within the course. Additional examples may help put the assignment in perspective. The central idea of this assignment is to focus on our powers of cultural production as a means to re-read, re-educate, to offer a critical perspective, and to challenge the dominance of problematic and oppressive meanings. The purpose of this assignment it twofold: to challenge dominant meanings of a particular cultural text or practice; and, to provide an example of cultural analysis that can be used as a model in teaching and learning about popular culture.
As with the first assignment, use and document both course materials and independent research to provoke and to deepen your thinking. Please discuss topics with the instructor prior to proceeding with the assignment. students will share highlights of their inquiries into pedagogy, literacies, and culture.
