Speaking from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., King stood before an estimated quarter of a million people who had gathered to demonstrate, calling for the passage of a Civil Rights Act.This speech would be influential in the passage of both the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Both of these Acts put an end to the Jim Crow South.#1) Please read the complete instructions FIRST!#2) NEXT read the following background, BEFORE you read the document:Dr. Martin Luther King opened his speech by discussing the Emancipation Proclamation, that had been issued by Abraham Lincoln one hundred years earlier, which freed slaves after the American Civil War. But, the Emancipation did not eliminate racism or racial inequality. Although slavery had long been illegal, African Americans in the 1960s were kept from their Constitutional rights due to segregation and discrimination, for 100 years.
Although the Emancipation had been a beacon of hope for African Americans, he pointed out that there was still much work to do before they could be considered “free.” He referenced the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and pointed out that African Americans were unable to take advantage of the liberties promised to them by these documents, and the founding fathers, that was granted to other citizens. These documents stated that all men are created equal? Yet, this statement was not true for African Americans who were not being treated as equals.King said the movement would not back down until there was justice and equality for everybody. He listed a series of demands, from the African-American community, that included granting them the right to vote across the entire United States, getting rid of “Whites Only” signs and spaces, ending police brutality, and improving their living conditions. He called for a country where people could coexist peacefully; a society where his children would not be judged or treated harshly simply because of the color of their skin. #3) Read the document, it is attached to the Discussion Board #3 assignment, found in Assignments on our class home page. #4) These are some questions to consider for your posts.
