In the essay, she considers the famous 19th century poet Emily Dickinson as a guest. She also considers inviting people she’s always wanted to spend time with, however, never had.
After you read the essay, consider who you would invite to a dinner party at your house. Are these people dead or alive or both? Are they imaginary, such as characters from fiction or film? You should have a at least five people – NO MORE. It’s not a rave – just dinner at your house.
Also, DO NOT invite people you already know, like your mother or grandfather or boyfriend. This is a creative exercise, so you have to do the hard work of creating a new world from an imagined experience.
After you have thought about your list of invited guests, think about what each person/character would say or do. In the essay, Hoffman imagines what the guests would say, how they would speak to her, what her responses and actions would be. How do your guests behave?
It is important to know your characters well. For instance, Hoffman knows about Emily Dickinson’s shyness and hermit-like behavior because she researched the characters. She uses this knowledge to help us understand Dickinson’s actions at the party.
