This paper is about engaging with primary sources and discussing what they have to say about a given topic. You will need to draw from at least one primary source we have already encountered in our weekly readings, but you MUST include an additional primary source from the digital collections that I have provided below.
Your goal is not to create a narrative or historical overview of the topic, but to address what these primary sources can tell us about the topic you have chosen and this will be the foundation for your thesis. Avoid composing a series of summaries of primary sources, and instead focus on the ideas and commentaries of the specific sources you choose. You should refrain from inserting your own judgments or commentaries upon the ideas contained within these sources, whether you agree or disagree with them. Instead, you should consider where your primary sources agree and disagree, support or contradict one another. You inject your own opinion in a number of ways, including the following: the emphasis of your paper in the issues you raise based upon your reading and reflection of the documents; the similarities and dissimilarities you find within and between your selected documents (over opinions & etc. ); and your analysis of the motivations, bias, emotions (etc.) behind the authors accounts.
Forming your own Thesis:
You must construct a thesis statement based on a specific area of focus from the topics provided below. Do not write simply: This paper looks at poverty in Colonial America, but you need a more specific statement that identifies your focus and gives an indication of the type (or specific) sources you are utilizing to explore this subject. Your thesis may be very broad interpretation of the topic, or it may be very specific. It is your own choice how you wish to address your topic, but note that the more in-depth you are in your discussion of the primary sources, the likelier it is that you will have a stronger (and more assertive) argument for your paper. To take a fictional example: if one prompt asked you to discuss Fashion in Colonial America, you might choose a more general survey examining primary sources that focus on comparisons of Native American and European clothing (or lack thereof), or two descriptions of colonists themselves from similar circumstances, or different eras. In both cases, you may end up with a thesis statement such as: This paper examines how two ______s used descriptions of ____s clothing and fashions to reinforce a sense of cultural superiority (or inferiority & etc.). Your thesis statement can certainly be more complex from this, and note: you should develop one as you are reading, or after you are reading the documents.
