Write a 7-10 page double-spaced essay critically analysing or answering one of the following questions or a topic of your own which you develop in consultation with the lecturer:What is our personal moral responsibility to act on climate change (or some other environmental problem)? Is climate change (or some other environmental issue) a perfect moral storm, a tragedy of the commons or some other type of commons problem? How does that affect how we understand the problem and how we should treat the problem ethically? What responsibilities does the United States (and other rich developed countries) have to act on climate change? What moral responsibility do we have to the poor? How does that effect our environmental responsibilities?Do you think that geoengineering can be morally justified? Under what circumstances? Is geoengineering a morally acceptable form of ecological restoration? What is the appropriate moral value for the environment? For instance, do you agree with Singer, Regan, Varner, Taylor, Leopold, Tshivongodze, Cuomo, or Whyte? You have the possibility of developing an essay topic of your own, but you would need to consult with the lecturer and get your topic approved. Due Dates: Students will submit a draft by 12pm on the 21st of November, which will be worth 20% of the grade for the assignment. The instructor will then provide comments on the paper. Students will then rework their paper, taking into account comments from the instructor, as well as feedback from class-mates during their in-class presentation. Students should submit the final essay by 12pm on the 7th of December.GuidelinesThe paper should preferably have a introductory and concluding paragraph, which show the aim of the piece and conclude with how it has been achieved. Be sure to critically engage with at least some of the literature in class. You can work with the Philosophy Writing Center in developing your papers once you have a draft. I encourage you to discuss the paper with your peers, perhaps working in pairs to comment on each others papers. I also encourage you to speak with the instructor during office hours and discuss your paper. You will submit online via Canvas. How You’ll Be GradedYou’ll be graded on three basic criteria:How well do you understand the issues you’re writing about?
How good are the arguments you offer?
Is your writing clear and well-organized?
We do not judge your paper by whether we agree with its conclusion. In fact, we may not agree amongst ourselves about what the correct conclusion is. But we will have no trouble agreeing about whether you do a good job arguing for your conclusion. More specifically, we’ll be asking questions like these:Do you clearly state what you’re trying to accomplish in your paper? Is it obvious to the reader what your main thesis is?
Do you offer supporting arguments for the claims you make? Is it obvious to the reader what these arguments are?
Is the structure of your paper clear? For instance, is it clear what parts of your paper are expository, and what parts are your own positive contribution?
Is your prose simple, easy to read, and easy to understand?
Do you illustrate your claims with good examples? Do you explain your central notions? Do you say exactly what you mean?
Do you present other philosophers’ views accurately and charitably?
The comments I find myself making on students’ philosophy papers most often are these:”Explain this claim” or “What do you mean by this?” or “I don’t understand what you’re saying here”
“This passage is unclear (or awkward, or otherwise hard to read)” “Too complicated” “Too hard to follow” “Simplify”
“Why do you think this?” “This needs more support” “Why should we believe this?” “Explain why this is a reason to believe P” “Explain why this follows from what you said before”
“Not really relevant”
“Give an example?”
Try to anticipate these comments and avoid the need for them! Have a look at this rubric to get a better sense of what one typically looks for in a philosophy essay.
