Now you are ready to engage the Twitter platform. But what does that mean?

A: For the duration of this assignment, you are expected to address the weekly themes explored in lecture. For example, Week 7s lecture is dedicated to privacy, therefore you must post messages or engage in Twitter activities that address privacy. Additionally, you will be encouraged to constantly examine your motivations, and to monitor the consequences of your actions. Have your posts and other engagements had any impact (positive or negative) on other people and/or the community at large? Finally, although we want you to engage as frequently as possible, you must engage AT LEAST five times per week (i.e. that includes posts, retweets, and direct engagement with your peers).
Your Weekly Report
Starting on the week of Oct. 31 (Week 7) and for the next four weeks, you are required to write a weekly ethnographic report detailing your experience on Twitter. Each report must have
4 components:
Date of entry.
Log that is, a record of every single engagement that you make, whether it be a post, a
like, a retweet, etc (minimum 5 per week). Each item must be timestamped and presented
in the form of a list. (N.B. Make the list in real time as you go, it will be easier).
Impressions that is, a short paragraph (2-4 sentences) detailing your reactions. Consider
the following questions: Did your engagements this week make you feel happy?
Alienated? Intellectually curious? Bored? Angry? Why or why not?
Plan of action that is, a short paragraph (2-4 sentences) detailing your plan of future
engagement. Consider the following questions: has your activity motivated you to act in particular ways during the following week (i.e. will you respond to a provocation, create a dialogue, try to strengthen or weaken a particular bond, etc.)? What specific mode (i.e. hashtag, PM, retweet, etc.) will accomplish these aims? Have your actions led to any material consequences IRL?
4Remember: be nice! (and, if youre not, use the tutorial discussions to explore why). Having said that, avoid racist/white supremacist, misogynist, or violent language of any kind. Yes, these kinds of interactions do occur in the social world. But they will not be tolerated here.
Part 2: Engage the platform and write 3 additional weekly reports.
Due Date: Nov. 7 Nov. 21 (Weeks 8-10) Weight: 15% (5% per report)
During Weeks 8, 9 and 10, you are required to post and/or engage on Twitter and complete three (3) additional ethnographic reports in accordance with the criteria noted above (i.e. Note 3: How do I put together my weekly report(s)?).
Part 3: Submit a reflection paper (+ your weekly reports)
Due Date: Nov. 28
Weight: 15% (for the paper, not including reports)
On the week of Nov. 29 (Week 11), you are required to submit a reflection paper on this project in addition to your completed ethnographic reports. The reflection paper gives you an opportunity to look back on the project as a whole, and to start developing critical perspectives on your experience by using a selection of media theory and history.
Your response paper will abide to the rigours and structure of formal academic writing. Therefore, in addition to summarizing and conceptualizing your experience with Twitter, you are required to incorporate the ideas or perspectives of TWO required readings from the following list: i) Chun, ii) Seaver, iii) Steward, iv) Kingsbury, or v) de Souza e Silva and Gordon.
Having said that, your choices will be informed mainly by your experience with the Social Media Group Project. For example, you may choose to focus on the interpersonal issues that arose from interacting with your peers, or you may choose to focus on technical issues, like the impact of algorithms and automation, or on political issues, like the potential (or lack thereof) offered by spreadable media.
