The following is the students post: “In the emergency medical field, emergency medical service crews often operate independently of each other with minimal supervision. Typically there is only one supervisor for as many as twenty or more ambulances. Keeping the ambulances on track, resupplied, and overseen can become quite a complex task at times, especially when there is a high call volume with critical patients. The job of the supervisor is one of supporting the crews and delegating when there is a critical incident. During a critical incident such as a major motor vehicle accident in which there is a large number of patients, a supervisor must oversee the treatment and transport of patients based on priority and severity of injuries. They must also coordinate with other inter-agencies such as police, fire, hospital, and air medical services. This has to be coordinated in a timely fashion and often it is essential for the supervisor to have faith and confidence in the crews they oversee. The crews have to be highly competent and self reliant in order to run an effective and effecient major incident. The supervisor must delegate which patients go first to the hospital and delegate which crews will respond to take which patients to the appropriate facility. During smaller operations in which a crew needs assistance it is essential that the supervisor be in more of a supporting role especially in the call such as a cardiac arrest. When arriving on scene, the lead paramedic is in charge of patient care. The supervisor has a duty to support the crew in the care of the patient in order to to provide a successful patient outcome and high function”
