Prince Alemayehu Tewodros was the son of Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia. He was kidnapped at the age of seven and taken to England in 1868 after Britain defeated his father at The Battle of Magdalla. The British claim the war was to rescue about 30 Europeans who were held hostage by Emperor Tewodros. The British sent 13,000 soldiers. The soldiers looted valuable Ethiopian artifacts, jewelry, valuable manuscripts and other treasures.
