Note: While public inquiry reports will help to provide much of the background information for your assignment, it is important that your own analysis goes beyond simply paraphrasing and summarizing this information. Draw on at least two academic journal articles to back up your analysis. Please briefly speak about: ? Your chosen research topic/case study. ? Some background info about the disaster you are working with. ? Communication challenges, which were encountered during the disaster. ? What made you choose your individual topics? ? Any challenges and/or strategies finding research/sources/references. Structural Suggestions: First: Introduce your argument, state your thesis or argument in a few sentences. After that, indicate what the reader might learn by exploring your claim with you throughout your essay, or your case study, and the specific communication challenges you identified, such as failures, problematic scenarios, etc. Second: Introduce the back-story and background material (e.g. the historical context or biographical information, a summary of relevant communication theory or criticism, the definition of a key term, etc.) For example: if you want to talk about Katrina: introduce the historical data of that event. Define the terminology you may be using throughout your essay, such as communication technology, risk communication, etc. (but only if it is relevant to the rest of your paper!) Bonus: Potentially raise a counterargument (describe, analyze and interpret it). For example: you may have found statements/information not to be true, or to be in contrast to what has been reported or stated before about a disaster and the communication challenges encountered. Finally: Conclude and come full circle with your essay by answering the overall question of Why? Your reader, I, will want to know what was at stake in your initial claim/thesis: Why does your interpretation of a communication phenomenon matter to anyone besides you? By answering the why, your essay explains its own significance. Although you might gesture at this question in your introduction, the fullest answer to it properly belongs at your essays end. If you leave it out, your reader will experience your essay as unfinished. In addition: ? Use news sources for background/historical claims (be careful about journalistic quality and integrity) ? Use Academic references and scholarly articles for refer to, analyse and make claims to your chosen disaster and communications topics. Format: ? 10-12 pages; double spaced ? Include a bibliography/references; appendix if required ? 6-8 sources (academic/journal articles too) ? Use headings/ subheadings (organization will add to your paper) i’ll be also uploading some papers as an example which you can see to get an idea regarding the assignment.
