The two stories we are examining deal with a breaking of trust in marriage. The reasons for the loss of trust are completely different; however, trust is a foundation of every successful relationship, and when it’s lost, the relationship will suffer and may even founder. What are the two writers saying in these stories about the particular characters, their conflicts, and the consequences of a loss of trust? Remember that the characters, the conflicts, the plot itself, are all fictions — imagined. Neverthless, they represent the writers’ ideas about marriage, about the role of trust and the consequences when it’s lost. You need not attempt to compare and contrast the stories to one another as there is little basis for comparison. However, you should analyze each story in terms of the theme explained above, always focusing on the writers’ ideas. “All Ahead of Them” by Tobias Wolff https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/07/08/all-ahead-of-them “A Glimpse of Scarlet” by Roxana Robinson POINTERS ON ORGANIZATION: Make sure that your introduction presents the theme (in an interesting way to get the reader interested!) and ends with a thesis statement that encompasses both stories. Both stories and writers must be mentioned in the introduction. Each body paragraph (you must have four or five) should begin with a topic sentence that makes an assertion or analytical statement. It cannot be a reference to the story (i.e. In “title” by XX), it cannot be a quote from the story, or a summary (i.e. “title” is about……). You can always begin with a statement of the author’s intention (i.e. In the character of Connie, Oates shows us the dangers of adolescence during the turbulent decade of the 1960s.” This topic sentence makes an analytical assertion. The paragraph would be expanded from here with at least four quotes or paraphrases from the story that provide evidence for and support that assertion / idea in the t.s. Each quote or paraphrase must be followed by your reaction to the quoted or paraphrased passage (again, at least four sentences).
Keep in mind, you must have at 4 body paragraphs minimum, but no more than five. I. Thesis statement II. Topic sentence / assertion I III. Topic sentence / assertion II IV. Topic sentence / assertion III V. Topic sentence / assertion IV VI. Topic sentence / assertion V
