Week 02 Discussion 03: Marijuana; Marijuana Should Be Legalized There is a lot of misinformation and propaganda surrounding the legalization of marijuana. As an expert, I believe that the drug should be legalized for use. The use of marijuana for medical reasons is not a recent idea. It has been embraced in the western countries since the 18000, and by the turn of the Twentieth Century, there were many publications about it. According to science, marijuana can be used to treat disorders such as pain relief and glaucoma among other disorders (Compton et al., 2016). Even today, many patients are using it for treatment of various ailments. This confirms does not harm if used in the right manner. Secondly, the legalization of marijuana will boost the economy through the creation of jobs. According to Compton et al. (2016), the legalization of the drug will have created over 200000 jobs by the end of 2010. Those are more jobs compared to those generated by the manufacturing sector or even the government employment. Being an economy driven by consumption, the United States will yield more income from the legalization. In addition, clinical data points out that marijuana improve the patient’s quality of life. However, the state should put laws in place to control the sales and distribution. The rules should define the minimum age and imposing tough controls. There should be criminal sanctions to people selling the drugs to the under-age. This will restrict their access and misuse of marijuana. The state can ensure the regulations are enforced by creating a task force. Revenue collected from marijuana will be used to control the enforcement and other activities like educating the public. Bias enforcement should be prevented by deploying people from all races to control the use and distribution. Reference Compton, W. M., Han, B., Hughes, A., Jones, C. M., & Blanco, C. (2017). Use of marijuana for medical purposes among adults in the United States. Jama, 317(2), 209-211.
