Although the Emancipation had been a beacon of hope for African Americans, he pointed out that there was still much work to do before they could be considered “free.” He referenced the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, and pointed out that African Americans were unable to take advantage of the liberties promised to them by these documents, and the founding fathers, that was granted to other citizens. These documents stated that all men are created equal? Yet, this statement was not true for African Americans who were not being treated as equals.King said the movement would not back down until there was justice and equality for everybody. He listed a series of demands, from the African-American community, that included granting them the right to vote across the entire United States, getting rid of “Whites Only” signs and spaces, ending police brutality, and improving their living conditions.
