People saw Communists everywhere, and they gave an incredible amount of power to Communist hunters – two of which would later become president. I think the big question way to frame this is as the discussion title puts it: How do we balance individual freedoms and collective security? But that is the kind of question that’s really difficult to answer, so a way to help us focus and discuss in a more concrete way is by thinking about the tests of loyalty and the fears of disloyalty and subversion that haunted Americans in the 1950s.
