Students must work individually and demonstrate independent, critical thinking. Students are expected to consult appropriate bibliographic sources, including academic papers, newspaper or magazine articles, government reports, publicly available datasets, etc. The topics for each essay are fairly broad, and students are encouraged to narrow down the focus of their essay by concentrating on specific aspects of the general topic assigned for each essay. I do not expect a detailed research paper; instead, I expect students to primarily focus on providing evidence of critical thinking, supporting their arguments with relevant references. Each essay must: – Be between 1,100 and 1,500 words long, excluding references. – Contain references to at least 4 sources; at least 2 of these must be academic papers. – Be submitted via Moodle by the deadlines indicated below for each essay. The grade for each essay will take the following aspects into consideration: – Overall evidence of critical thinking and analysis – Originality – Clarity and cohesiveness of writing – Appropriateness of referenced materials.
