Select one of the podcasts listed below. Before listening to the podcast, look over its web
page, making note of the names of the guests and other info that might be helpful to you
in note-taking. It may be helpful at this stage to consult some general reference work for
background on the topic (listed below). Next, use Google to look into the guests, finding
out what they study and where they work. Then listen to the podcast. As you listen, make
note of major issues, especially points of contention or open questions, being sure to keep
track of who is saying what.
Research the issues you discovered using one or more of the databases listed
below. Identify 3-5 articles from scholarly journals that help you address one or more of
those issues. Often its easier to write if you choose one particular issue. And finding 3-5
articles serving your purpose well should entail skimming a dozen or more articles or at
least their abstracts.
Having done all this, prepare a plan for a five-page essay (~1,700 words,
including works cited). The introductory paragraph should address the following, most
likely in this order: the period and civilization, connections to other times and
civilizations (as relevant), the general topic of the podcast, and the specific issue(s)
considered in your essay. The next paragraph, the first body paragraph, should provide an
overview of the podcast episode, introducing the guests, listing the main topics of the
conversation, noting interesting points, and generally building up your specific issue by
the end of the paragraph and a discussion of that issues significance.
Your subsequent body paragraphs should describe what you found out through
your research. Organization here will vary, but its generally a bad idea to organize these
paragraphs by source; ie, one paragraph for each source. And you should introduce your
sources carefully, not only by the author affiliation/expertise but also by disciplinary
approach. The conclusion of your paper should, again, address the significance of your
essays issue and go on to repeat any solutions youve found, or further questions that
have come up as weve tried to find answers.
