Essay #3 Academic Argument with Research The third essay for the semester is an academic argument which must incorporate outside research. We have spent some time in class discussing argument as a rhetorical mode as well as choosing appropriate and solid sources of outside information. We have discussed the fact that in order to create a strong and credible argument on any position, we cannot simply rely on what information we may personally possess, but need to bring in additional information or detail to strengthen our own positions and appeal to the logos, pathos and ethos of our audience. For this essay you are to choose a topic for which you can construct an academic argument of at least 1,250 words (4-6 pages) that correctly incorporates material from at least two (2) appropriate and credible outside sources. Any topics that can be made into arguments are acceptable for this essay, EXCEPT for the things contained in the Banned List on the syllabus. Essays written on anything listed on the Banned List will result in a zero; there is no exception to that statement for any reason. Essays that do not meet the word requirement will not be able to earn passing grades. For your outside sources, it is recommended that you use the various databases available through the Triton College Library, and that you do not simply Google a topic and use the first responses that appear. We have talked in class about the credibility of sources and how the ones found via the average Google search may not be the most credible. Remember that as we have discussed in class, credible sources are things published within the last 8-10 years by reputable authors or agencies such as government or educational offices, and are able to be fully sourced. Failure to make use of credible or appropriate sources will result in grade penalties; as always, if you are in doubt or have questions, ask me or bring it up in class. Because this essay requires outside sources, be sure that you are following MLA citation standards. We will peer edit rough drafts of this essay in class on Tuesday, October 30th, and the final copy will be due via Blackboard by midnight of Thursday, November 1st. Please be conscious of the massive amount of time given for this essay, and be aware of the fact that final essays need to reflect a level of work commensurate with the time allowed for completion. No late papers will be accepted.
