In 1919, historian and sociologist Max Weber delivered two influential speeches to German university students who were trying to make sense of the German defeat in World War I.

The speeches, Politics as a Vocation and Science as a Vocation, address the nature of learning, scholarship, and political action. Read these speeches and write an essay that focuses on one or more aspects of Webers argument with which you either agree or disagree. You may want to consider one speech or compare the two. In what ways are Webers views relevant today, nearly a century after they were delivered?

Discuss the many levels of conflict between Antigone and Creon. The two main points of contention are 1) the principles each one stands for and 2) the personal feelings that seem to elevate this conflict from a simple dispute over ideals to a tragedy for all concerned.

First, explain to your reader the principles Antigone and Creon stand for. That is, find places in the play where Antigone upholds the rights of the individual to live by her own personal, religious, and family values. Then show how these values are opposed by the public, civic, and social concerns voiced by Creon, who holds that a government has a right to assert its authority and demand loyalty from its citizens. Next, show how this conflict of ideals is further complicated by personal feelings, not the least of which is each one’s pride. Identify places in the play where we see, for example, Creon stating his belief that Antigone’s actions and words make her an ungovernable young woman. Show us things he says and does
that let us know Creon thinks Antigone is disobedient and rebellious, and if he does not control her, not only she will become a threat to (what Creon believes is) a man’s rightful authority over family and society, but he, Creon, will lose face. Also show your reader Antigones personal stake in the argument – how as a woman
who has just entered into adulthood and has become the moral anchor of her family, she refuses to be dictated to (among other possible reasons because of her royal status). You must use examples from the text, but keep these brief and concentrate on your explanations. To cite the text, just place the line numbers in parentheses at the end of your quotation. Example: Your quotation here (771)

After you read the material, think about your own political ideology, then write a short paper (2-3 pages) in which you:Make sure you explain WHY and HOW these “agents of socialization” impacted you.
Indicate whether or not your experience is in alignment with what the textbook says what does the textbook say, and does your experience fit with what is in the book? If not, why not?

Does your district have a long tradition of supporting one party, or has it been changing in recent years?

The purpose of this paper is to provide practical application of material learned by developing concepts learned in the presentations. The body of the paper must be at least 6 pages (double spaced, 12-point font) and include level 1, 2, and 3 headings as appropriate and necessary. In addition to the body, you must include a separate title page and reference page. Do not submit an abstract with this assignment.Do not write the paper without carefully studying the related presentations. To achieve more than a passing grade, you must demonstrate a mastery of the presentations and factual information and incorporate those ideas into your paper. Naturally, stylistic points such as grammar and spelling will be considered in grading. Your paper must adhere to current format as specified in the Course Style Guidelines document. Doing the minimum amount of work does not guarantee a perfect score.Topic: Becoming an Informed Voter Researching Your Congressional DelegationThe research paper has 2 steps. First, you will analyze the background of your congressional district and your U.S. Representative. Second, you will analyze the political background of your state and 1 of your U.S. Senators. You may choose which senator to study; however, if one senator is newly elected and does not have interest group ratings, study the other one. Note that these are United States Representatives and Senators. Do not use members of your state legislature.Begin by reviewing the presentation on Becoming an Informed Voter. The example of Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia is used. If you live in the Sixth Congressional District of Virginia, you will have to adopt another Virginia congressional district as your temporary home and write about that one, since you have already been given some of the information on Bob Goodlatte. If you have a newly elected representative who has not yet received interest group ratings, get the interest group ratings of a representative from a neighboring district. After reviewing the presentation, the first part will deal with your congressional district and congressman; the second part will deal with your state and senator. As explained in the presentation, interest group scores may be found at Vote Smart.A helpful source to find information for this paper is The Almanac of American Politics by Richard E. Cohen and James A. Barnes.
Use the Course Style Guidelines document to properly format this essay as you will be required to use formal writing with level 1, 2, and 3 headings as necessary to address and elaborate on each of the following questions in paragraph form: What is the recent political history of your district and state?
How has your state and congressional district voted in recent presidential and congressional elections?
Can your district or state be considered to be leaning Republican or Democrat?
Are the political parties relatively even, or does one party dominate the elections?

How did your representative and senator come to power? (Thoroughly describe their backgrounds.)
How do the interest groups (ADA, ACLU, ACU, CC or FRC) rate your representative and senator? (Note: If the Christian Coalition score is not available, you may substitute the Family Research Council score. Include the exact scores from each of these groups. The rationale for this is explained in the presentation.)
Based on these ratings, would you classify your representative and senator as conservative or liberal? Justify your answer.Do not submit your paper in the form of a series of questions and answers. Organize this information into a standard research paper (paragraph form with level headings) utilizing the specified Course Style Guidelines format. Consult the grading rubric to make sure that all the necessary information has been included.
