You have read If Aristotle Ran General Motors by Tom Morris.
The question of whether a business can be good is one that evokes many more questions. Good at what? Good as in morally good? Good at customer service? Good at making money? Good at being socially responsible or philanthropic?
How does Morris relate the teachings of Aristotle to these concepts in the business place? How does Aristotle relate to the ethical framework that should inform us in making our decision?
The four themed areas:
Part I: Truth (The Intellectual Dimension)
Part II: Beauty (The Aesthetic Dimension)
Part III: Goodness (The Moral Dimension)
Part IV: Unity (The Spiritual Dimension)Questions to consider:
How does Morris relate Aristotles view on how one should act in the workplace (as well as in life)? What parallels can be drawn from your job?
How does Aristotle (through Morris, in this case) inform a business/organization about its core values; and how could a business/organization develop and/or sustain those values?
What are the overall lessons of Aristotle (as reported by Morris)?

Post Instructions This week, you will think like a qualitative researcher. Using your topic area of interest, propose a qualitative research question. (Note: This should be an open-ended question). Briefly explain how you might design a study using the interpretive approach to research. Organize your post like this: Area of research: Chronic Homelessness Research question: How do chronically homeless individuals view their needs for safety, health and well-being? Research design: Chronically homeless individuals will be interviewed individually. Subjects will be recruited from a community soup kitchen, local drop in center and community outreach. A series of eligibility questions will determine if subjects are chronically homeless (using HUD definition). Subjects will complete an informed consent and confidentiality agreement. Interviews will be conducted by trained social workers, using 5 open-ended questions. Interviews will be audio-taped with permission and transcribed. Data will be analyzed using an iterative process, examining emergent themes. Findings will be used to develop policy and practice recommendations at the local level. Results and recommendations will be disseminated through a presentation to the community homelessness coalition, and submission to a national social work conference and peer reviewed social work journals.
The basic equation for risk is defined as R = (C*V*T) where R is the level of risk, C is the consequences (public health, our economy, government action, public confidence in our institutions) of an attack, V is an assessment of the vulnerability of a potential target (how hard or easy it would be for it to be hit by terrorists) and T is the threat or the likelihood that a specific target will suffer an attack or disaster from a specific weapon. The Department of Homeland Security has stated that it will apply risk management principles to homeland security operations and has stated that Ultimately, homeland security is about effectively managing risks to the Nations security (DHS 2010, 2). Drawing upon your class readings and additional research, examine how risk management is used by the homeland security enterprise and the many benefits derived from such activities as resource allocation, strategic planning, grant funding, or any other homeland security-related initiatives. You must provide at least 2 reasons. Your reasons must be specific. For example: There are a lot of homeless people and homelessness is bad is NOT specific. You need to use facts, numbers/statistics, specific examples from real-world incidents. Some general writing advice:Keep it simple. Dont use big words or try to make sentences too complex. This can get in the way of your meaning. I shouldnt have to read a sentence more than twice to understand it; if I do, that means that youve over-complicated your writing.
Watch out for repetition. Sometimes you think you are saying something new, but really youre just rehashing something youve already said. This happens a lot when you dont have a clear structure to the paperyoull say something in one paragraph and then say it again (worded slightly differently) in another paragraph.
Every claim that isnt general knowledge must be backed up by evidence (a citation). You dont just list your references at the end of the paperyou have to actually USE them. Review the rules for citations. Dont get caught leaving them out. This is plagiarism. When in doubt, provide a citation.
Dig deep. Dont stay at the surface level. Dont just give me vague assertions or claims. Generalizations arent going to be persuasive
