What are the intrinsic values that determine a good life or in other words, what makes life good? What standard (or criteria) should we use when evaluating whether a life was good for a person? In other words, what is the correct theory of well-being?

We have learned the three major theories of well-being and have applied them and our own critical thinking and considered judgments to various hypothetical situations. Now it is your chance to reflect in-depth on the topic of the good life. To do this: from the essay questions below chose one to answer and write a 1200 – 3000-word paper that explains and defends youre answer to this question in contrast to at least one opposing position.
This paper assignment is an argumentative philosophy paper. That means in this paper you are attempting to defend or justify your own belief/outlook/answer to a question. In a paper like this you are talking about your own view, so it is perfectly fine to use the first-person point of view (I, we), but keep in mind that in philosophy (and in most fields) we dont really care about peoples mere opinions. People believe all sorts of things, and unless we see a good reason to take one of those beliefs seriously, as possibly true or worthwhile, we ignore those beliefs. If you want smart, intelligent people to take your opinions seriously, you need to demonstrate that there are clear and compelling reasons to take your view seriously as a belief they should take up themselves or at least respect as possibly true or worthwhile. You should assume that your audience is skeptical and is already inclined to believe that your view is probably false. You should write your paper to try and convince this skeptical reader to change his or her mind.
To do this in your paper, (1) you should make sure to take a clear position in response to your chosen question and defend your answer by making rational arguments in support of it (i.e. give logical reasons, based in critical analysis of the concepts, to show why it is the best). Next, (2) consider the perspective of your opponent: how could they attack your position to demonstrate that your view is wrong? In other words, how might they try and identify a fatal or embarrassing flaw in your theory? Try to make the strongest and most plausible case against your view that you can (i.e. give logical reasons, based in critical analysis of the concepts, to show why the opposing view is best). Finally, (3) you should try to address your imagined opponents points and demonstrate why your view is ultimately the best one.
Throughout these steps, you should demonstrate a good sense of interpersonal and cultural awareness by correctly identifying and defending controversial premises using sound reasoning, helpful analogies, appeals to plausible principles, etc. If your argument depends on the acceptance of a controversial premise or belief, you need to show that you are aware of that and try to convince your reader that this belief is true. You should also draw on examples from the course readings, videos, class discussion and and/or any helpful examples you create where appropriate. You should aim for reflective equilibrium by trying to make sure the logic of your argument would be consistent with virtually any relevant situation and is not arbitrary reasoning meant to apply in that situation but never to be used again.

Is Hard Work Good for You?
We have discussed the value of at least three overlapping but distinct kinds of work: 1) Work as necessary or important responsibilities/chores/actions you may have to fulfill, but which you find unpleasant or wish you could avoid. Examples of this type could include everything from going to school, studying for exams, training for and getting a job, taking care of children or the needy, cleaning the house, etc. 2) Work as employment to produce the goods and services necessary for society while also providing income and an occupation to individuals. This type of work focuses on the economic functions jobs or employment provide for both individuals and communities. For example, manufacturing jobs may help a society produce goods and equipment to perform various functions and services, while also allowing for workers to have an occupation (something to do) and income to cover life necessities and other expenses while stimulating the economy. 3) Work as vocation that gives meaning to ones life directly from either the purpose or experience of the work/task itself. This type of work can be a job you are hired to perform or a self-employed vocation that you choose for yourself. But with this type of work you receive positive well-being (an improved life) directly from the work itself and not (just) because the work helps you make money. So, a job someone does not enjoy or find meaningful, but does anyway simply to make money would only count as work under the first two types, since it is not a vocation. Whereas a job you enjoy and find deeply meaningful, but which also provides food, shelter, and income may qualify as an example of work of all three types since it is a vocation and performs the economic functions of ordinary employment and may also be something you must do even on days when you would rather be doing something else. On the other hand, going to school for example would only count as work of the first type for many people since it is not usually a vocation and it is also not a form of employment, but instead is simply something one must do to either get a job or achieve something else. For this paper topic, consider these three types of work and the role they may play in making life good or bad for individuals and communities and answer one or both of the following two questions. In other words, you can choose to write your paper focusing exclusively on one of these two questions to provider greater depth or answer both questions.
A) Given your probable desire to balance the extremes found in the case of a Life of Leisure with those of Working Life and the article we read regarding the value of work, what do you think work is for in the life of the individual? What role should it play in your life to make your life better? Is a job or career simply a way to make money to survive and pay for goods or should it do more, such as provide a vocation and meaning to your life? For this question, you should discuss all three of the distinct types of work discussed above and determine what role they play in determining the quality of an individuals life.
B) Take a wide social perspective and think about what is good for society as well as for individuals. From a macro-level perspective, what is work for? Is it simply a means of production, a way to produce the goods and services necessary to operate our society and make our lives comfortable? Or is work about more than the outputs it produces? What implications does this have for incorporating technology and automation into our lives. If robots can perform our jobs better than we can, should we replace human workers with robots? If you think robots should replace some jobs but not others, what is your criteria for determining which jobs should be replaced
PHIL 2306 Ethics Spring 2018
and which should not? Remember, in principle robots can potentially do virtually any task a human being can, so be specific. To answer these questions recall the more mindful and deliberate approach to integrating modern technology that the Amish and New London practice and notice that the Amish and New London place a much higher priority on some of the three types of work identified above when compared to our own society where technology is released almost immediately upon discovery regardless of its impact or threat to various types of work so long as the new technology does not have obvious flaws (such as cause explosions/poison/death etc.) What are the benefits and costs of each approach? Which approach is best for societies overall (or at least best for our society)?
A good essay will:
– For Question B: Identify which of the distinct types of work (of the three identified above) are prioritized by the Amish and New London (they are somewhat different from each other) and what role they play in their respective societies as compared to our own society.
– Briefly consider how each of the three theories of well-being would approach these questions as appropriate.
– Include a thesis that is focused and appropriate given the assignment.
– Clearly and succinctly state the main argument for the thesis.
– Correctly identify and defend your arguments controversial premises using
sound reasoning, well-chosen examples, insightful analogies, etc.
– While defending your argument, make sure you play devils advocate and
try to include and develop the most clear and compelling reasons to reject
your argument/thesis.
– You should then respond to this negative case to the best of your ability to
convince your audience to support your view.

What is the source of the disagreement? Which author is more compelling in your opinion with regard to this one issue? Explain your reasoning.

Choose any two texts from the final unit (Wyschogrod, Kaplan, Falk, or Daly) to write about. This assignment is to be done in discrete sections.Provide a brief overview of each reading. What are the major issues it deals with, and what is the central argument? You should include evidence from the text in the form of quotations (which need to be unpacked and explained in your own words).Find one issue or topic on which the two authors could be seen to disagree. This paper is to be at least 3 pages double spaced in length (it can be longer). Each section is worth 25% of your final grade. Each section should be at least one page in length but can be longer although the entire paper should not be more than 6 pages.

Explain why you believe the message isn’t as effective as it could be and how your suggestions would make it more effective.

Find a communication example that you believe could be improved by applying the visual design principles you read about this week. It can be from any medium a webpage, a magazine ad, a promotional email, an illustration from a report, etc., as long as you can display it in the forum. Identify the visual weaknesses and describe ways to fix them.

How does Shakespeare use the typical elements of Revenge drama to present these issues?

Use the Frame Tales and only the assigned stories from The Thousand and One Nights and The Decameron in your Essay. Do not substitute the stories with any other stories from these 2 works. AClosely examine the Introductory or frame sections of the tales in The Thousand and One Nights, and The Decameron, and discuss the situations, issues and concerns raised in each. Why and how are these sections crucial in each text, and what do they illustrate or expose? How do they provide important contexts for the stories that you read later, and how do they add a sense of tension, fear, anxiety or social hostilities to the situation of the story tellers and the varieties of tales they tell? In your discussion you must include some discussion of the assigned tales also to bring out the contrasts, ironies, social comment, or challenges that the tales portray. B Hamlet portrays the elements seen in The Thousand and One Nights with a few variations a royal family, treachery and ambition, the appearance of marital betrayal not entirely proven. Please compare the issues in the 2 works; you must consider the influence of the Renaissance, the overall situation in the Danish court, Hamlets frame of mind, as well as his modes of thinking based on his temperament. CCompare in detail the role of women in The Thousand , The Decameron, and Hamlet. Show how the story elements characters, plots, fantasy present human and social questions, raise criticism and make comments on issues. Use textual illustrations from each work..
