explain the broad background against which you will conduct your research.

You should include a brief overview of the general area of study within which your proposed research falls, summarizing the current state of knowledge and recent debates on the topic. This will allow you to demonstrate a familiarity with the relevant field as well as the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.4. Research Questions The proposal should set out the central aims and questions that will guide your research. Before writing your proposal, you should take time to reflect on the key questions that you are seeking to answer. Many research proposals are too broad, so reflecting on your key research questions is a good way to make sure that your project is sufficiently narrow and feasible. You might find it helpful to prioritize one or two main questions(Specific Aims), from which you can then derive a number of secondary research questions(Sub-Aims). The proposal should also explain your intended approach to answering the questions: will your approach be empirical, or theoretical etc?5. Research MethodsThe proposal should outline your research methods, explaining how you are going to conduct your research. Your methods may include visiting particular libraries or archives, field work or interviews. Most research is library-based. If your proposed research is library-based, you should explain where your key resources are located . If you plan to conduct field work or collect empirical data, you should provide details about this (e.g. if you plan interviews, who will you interview? How many interviews will you conduct? Will there be problems of access?). This section should also explain how you are going to analyze your research findings.6. Significance of Research The proposal should demonstrate the originality of your intended research. You should therefore explain why your research is important (for example, by explaining how your research builds on and adds to the current state of knowledge in the field or by setting out reasons why it is timely to research your proposed topic).

Identify which of the distinct types of work (of the three identified above) are prioritized by the Amish and New London (they are somewhat different from each other) and what role they play in their respective societies as compared to our own society.

Is Hard Work Good for You?
We have discussed the value of at least three overlapping but distinct kinds of work: 1) Work as necessary or important responsibilities/chores/actions you may have to fulfill, but which you find unpleasant or wish you could avoid. Examples of this type could include everything from going to school, studying for exams, training for and getting a job, taking care of children or the needy, cleaning the house, etc. 2) Work as employment to produce the goods and services necessary for society while also providing income and an occupation to individuals. This type of work focuses on the economic functions jobs or employment provide for both individuals and communities. For example, manufacturing jobs may help a society produce goods and equipment to perform various functions and services, while also allowing for workers to have an occupation (something to do) and income to cover life necessities and other expenses while stimulating the economy. 3) Work as vocation that gives meaning to ones life directly from either the purpose or experience of the work/task itself. This type of work can be a job you are hired to perform or a self-employed vocation that you choose for yourself. But with this type of work you receive positive well-being (an improved life) directly from the work itself and not (just) because the work helps you make money. So, a job someone does not enjoy or find meaningful, but does anyway simply to make money would only count as work under the first two types, since it is not a vocation. Whereas a job you enjoy and find deeply meaningful, but which also provides food, shelter, and income may qualify as an example of work of all three types since it is a vocation and performs the economic functions of ordinary employment and may also be something you must do even on days when you would rather be doing something else. On the other hand, going to school for example would only count as work of the first type for many people since it is not usually a vocation and it is also not a form of employment, but instead is simply something one must do to either get a job or achieve something else. For this paper topic, consider these three types of work and the role they may play in making life good or bad for individuals and communities and answer one or both of the following two questions. In other words, you can choose to write your paper focusing exclusively on one of these two questions to provider greater depth or answer both questions.
A) Given your probable desire to balance the extremes found in the case of a Life of Leisure with those of Working Life and the article we read regarding the value of work, what do you think work is for in the life of the individual? What role should it play in your life to make your life better? Is a job or career simply a way to make money to survive and pay for goods or should it do more, such as provide a vocation and meaning to your life? For this question, you should discuss all three of the distinct types of work discussed above and determine what role they play in determining the quality of an individuals life.
B) Take a wide social perspective and think about what is good for society as well as for individuals. From a macro-level perspective, what is work for? Is it simply a means of production, a way to produce the goods and services necessary to operate our society and make our lives comfortable? Or is work about more than the outputs it produces? What implications does this have for incorporating technology and automation into our lives. If robots can perform our jobs better than we can, should we replace human workers with robots? If you think robots should replace some jobs but not others, what is your criteria for determining which jobs should be replaced
PHIL 2306 Ethics Spring 2018
and which should not? Remember, in principle robots can potentially do virtually any task a human being can, so be specific. To answer these questions recall the more mindful and deliberate approach to integrating modern technology that the Amish and New London practice and notice that the Amish and New London place a much higher priority on some of the three types of work identified above when compared to our own society where technology is released almost immediately upon discovery regardless of its impact or threat to various types of work so long as the new technology does not have obvious flaws (such as cause explosions/poison/death etc.) What are the benefits and costs of each approach? Which approach is best for societies overall (or at least best for our society)?
A good essay will:

– Briefly consider how each of the three theories of well-being would approach these questions as appropriate.
– Include a thesis that is focused and appropriate given the assignment.
– Clearly and succinctly state the main argument for the thesis.
– Correctly identify and defend your arguments controversial premises using
sound reasoning, well-chosen examples, insightful analogies, etc.
– While defending your argument, make sure you play devils advocate and
try to include and develop the most clear and compelling reasons to reject
your argument/thesis.
– You should then respond to this negative case to the best of your ability to
convince your audience to support your view.

Discuss, talk about, and look at. You are not having a discussion in your paper. Better terms to describe what you are conducting in your paper are: analyzing, critiquing, studying, investigating, inquiring into, diagnosing, surveying, or summarizing.

One of the best ways to learn about religion and culture is to visit a religious, cultural, or sacred place or speak to a follower. The experience of meeting believers, reading about beliefs, or witnessing sacred events can teach us more than merely reading a text.
You may choose to visit a religious service and write a field report/ reflection on your visit along with a paragraph about the religious group/place. Visit a service and then write a report of your visit by following a list of guidelines provided below. You must visit the place or speak with the people during the current semester or up to a max of 4 months prior.
Or, you may choose to visit an educational place such as the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Art, the Holocaust Museum, History Museums, or related venues. Visit the place and then write a report/reflection of your visit following the guidelines below.
The last option would be that you may choose to have an interview/conversation with at least 3 people (followers or leaders) of the religion and write a reflection about what each said and a comparison between what the followers shared.
If you are unsure whether someplace counts as an experience speak with the professor. Additionally, some places may be able to count for multiple religions so speak with the instructor about this. You can combine this assignment with other assignments. See instructor during office hours.
More Specific Detials on Sections
The first section needs to include include details on the name of the place / names of the people (with contact information for verification), the religious or sacred association(s), when the place was founded, and other facts about the place, activity, or people encountered for the experience.
The second section is about what you learned of the religion/spirituality from the experience/interviews. Think of using terms from the beginning of class such as monotheistic, polytheistic, atheism, cosmological, transcendental, or terms related to the religion itself. Do NOT repeat what you stated in the first section!
In the third section reflect on your personal encounter with the religious/educational experience/interviews. Include your thoughts, reactions, what you felt, and a comparison to what you may already have known or believed. You can also use this section to compare the experience to your own experience with the sacred/religious.
There is no specific number of words or pages required to complete this assignment so long as the heading, three sections, and resource page are complete.
Document is to be submitted via canvas. E-mailed experiences/interviews will not be graded.
Grading:
3pts Heading and grammar
3pts Information on where you visited / Who you interviewed
12 pts Detail of what you learned
12 pts Personal reflection

WRITING GUIDELINES
Use For: Experience Assignments, Video
Reviews, and especially Mini-Papers!Each assignment should include a heading with your name, course section number, date, and any other information required by specific assignment.
Any formal and academic writing in this class means:
Proper footnote or endnote citations
(Chicago Style/ CMS: see Reference Section for links).
Proper Bibliography page (Chicago Style / CMS)
Use of proper grammar! Avoid slang unless it is part of a quote! You may lose points for grammatical and spelling errors.
Remember to take the topic of your assignment/paper seriously and to engage the subject matter applying reflective, critical, creative, and analytical thinking. Be sure to clearly state the topic you are addressing.
For Mini-papers have an introduction, body, and conclusion in your paper.
The introduction is where you are setting up what the specific subject and question you are answering is. The introduction sets about to explain why this topic is important, resolves an issue or responds to a specific question(s), and tells how the paper will be organized. Get to the point of your paper and explain what your goal is for the paper. Introduce your agenda for the assignment not the general or broader topic area.
The body of your paper is the argument. This is where you bring in your resources, citations, data, and analysis, give example and detail to your argument. The body will be made of multiple sections and will look back to the introduction and forward to the conclusion.
The conclusion is not just the summary or full restatement of your introduction. Rather, this is where you drive home the point and give the answer to the question you pose in the introduction. The most important points of the body can be re-framed here to provide the key points, but be careful not to simply summarize.
In general, with your writing avoid the following words as much as possible. Overuse may result in point deductions.
Next, Now, Another. Especially avoid these as the start of a section.
Thing, things, it. Define your subject clearly and avoid these words as often as possible.
Basically, a lot. Both words are overused and unnecessary, work to avoid them.

Avoid contractions! You may lose points.
See the syllabus regarding plagiarism! Cheating/plagiarism on any assignment will result in zero points for that assignment.
SOURCES
The same rules are required for almost all assignments. For assignments, you may use textbooks, class notes, class videos, other additional academic sources, or a source specific to that religion. Educational books found at the HCC library should be acceptable. If in doubt about a resource speak with the instructor. If you use a book online and not a hardcover book, please make note of that through proper citation and bibliography. Include URL
Websites that are used MUST come from the approved list, be of the specific Religious group being researched (seek approval if unsure), be an academically oriented educational site, be a known and reputable museum, or be approved by the instructor. The entire Website address MUST on the Bibliography page.
You can lose points for unapproved sites. You will lose up to 10% of the assignment points for each use of a Wiki, Blog, ABOUT, FAQ, or similar site (even from .edu pages). If an online search or submission shows materials from these websites it will be assumed, you used those websites. (**write out the website address of your online sources to avoid this assumption)
Do not use one religious site to provide facts about another. This will result in a loss of points. Example: Do not use a Christian apologetics website to talk about Buddhism.

Describe very briefly (in1-2 sentences) the study we will be doing and your hypotheses. Were looking at the impact of these interventions on worry, general anxiety, and psychological flexibility in college students.

1. Describe what CBT is
2. Say CBT has been shown to be highly effective for the treatment of anxiety disorders then cite a review, meta-analysis where they make this point or at least 5 RCTs where CBT was shown to be effective. To find a review (which is a paper where they summarize research in a given area up to that data) or meta-analysis look a the Craske et al. 2014 or Arch et al. 2012 article on Sakai see what articles they cite when making their point about CBTs efficacy or it being the gold-standard treatment
3. Describe ACT. Then say although it is more recent and has less empirical support. ACT has been shown to be effective for the treatment of anxiety disorders (List out the RCTs showing that ACT works)
4. Explain that although we know that CBT and ACT work we dont know why they work and so more recent research has been done looking at specific components of these treatments
5. If you havent describe what cognitive defusion and cognitive restructuring are yet, do so here
6. Describe studies that have examined cognitive restructuring and cognitive defusion.
Make sure to describe what were doing in the class for our study.
8. Your hypothesis should be a prediction about which intervention, defusion or restructuring will lead to a greater reduction in worry and general anxiety, and a greater increase in psychological flexibility. Do not say we are looking at ACT or CBT because we are not, were only looking at parts of these treatments.

Why do Carter and/or Donoghue update fairy tales and what do their new versions reveal about voice, power, and treatment of others?

Writers old and new use horror stories and fairy tales to not only make sense of the world, but to critique society. They expose how others are created, discriminated against, scapegoated, and far worsereviled, persecuted, raped, and even killed. They highlight issues and that are often denied or hidden, such as homoerotic desire. They also use their pens to question class and social structures as well as the nature of what is real and what is not. And, finally, writers like Angela Carter and Emma Donoghue update horror stories and fairy tales to completely alter the lessons and outcomes typically conveyed in patriarchal societies in order give voice and power to women and those so often marginalized in the classic versions of these texts. As scholar Kelli Link insists, tales of the fantastic such as those we have read are necessarily in conversation with each other, dependent on each other to achieve their effects. They speak to common themes and carry them further or spin them in new directions. In this final project, your task is to analyze new and old versions of fairy tales. What do fairy tales reveal about our society and our values? Why did Donoghue and Carter feel the need to update them? What themes and motifs do the stories have in common and, equally important, how are these themes and motifs treated differently and to what effect?
