General Motors (GM) has recently announced that it will cut up to 14,000 jobs and close up to five manufacturing plants. After numerous incidents of Colin Kaepernick and other football players taking a knee during the national anthem to protest and bring attention to their beliefs, the public response was mostly not good. The NFL, trying to respond quickly, considered fining players who took a knee during the anthem, but settled on just not showing the anthem at all in order to keep the general public from being outraged every time a player took a knee. The utilitarianism theory in effect here is that there arent as many angry people anymore because the NFL has shielded them from being able to see it on national television. Utilizing the utilitarianism theory, this was a good (ethical) decision. Was it really an ethical decision though? Some would argue the decision prevented the players from being able to exercise their first amendment rights and share their beliefs.
