How is development connected to prostitution, and what are the ramifications of the livelihoods of women in Thailand?
How does patriarchy, and religion affect prostitution in Thailand? The reason I am considering this topic is that it involves the course materials covered in the course. Although an unlikely positive, prostitution plays an important role in the socio-economic development of Thailand. This topic will analyze the aspects of social issues and the repercussions that development brings along. The cost of what these nations are achieving development and the aftermath. Women belonging from poor households are the primary candidates of employment and patriarchal ideologies and religious beliefs play a huge role. Recruiting migrant women is common in this sector, offering not only a form of income but the consequences include violence, abuse and diseases. Employees are deeply in debt by different forms of payment which results in more labour and overtime but less actual pay.
Among the many sources I will be using, Yoshinori Nishizaki in Prostitution and Female Leadership in Rural Thailand: The Story of Phayao Province states that many village families in Phayao traditionally relied on prostitution for income, causing a massive influx of young girls into the lucrative sex industry in Bangkok and abroad. In the 1990s, however, AIDS started taking a heavy toll on Phayao’s small population. Similarly, Wawer, Podhisita, Kanungsukkasem, Pramualratana, and Mcnamara in Origins and working conditions of female sex workers in urban Thailand: Consequences of social context for HIV transmission claims that according to a study conducted the data suggest that women were systematically recruited into prostitution from villages in the North and their work enabled them to comply with traditional family support roles. The majority of all women maintained financial ties to home by sending income to parents, siblings and other relatives but this pattern is stronger among Northern women. The lives of commercial sex workers were found to be tightly controlled by brothel owners and managers.
This study will engage Dependency Theory as a theoretical framework to analyze the identified research issues. It will be used to explain that despite the ongoing development and prohibition of prostitution the socio-economic conditions of the workers were not improved and development was not taking the right toll for them.
