The overall point of any research project is to discover more information about a particular topic; and then the overall point of writing a research paper is to organize your new knowledge about that topic and explain it in a clear and coherent manner for other readers. But in order for you to successfully accomplish either the research component or the writing component of this project, you must first develop and practice some essential skills.
Below are the four stages you will move through during the project in order to get to the final product: your Research Paper. Each stage focuses on a particular skill (for 2 of the stages you are required to turn in a check-up assignment worth 25 points each). Before you start writing your Research Paper, we will learn about and practice each of these skills in our daily reading assignments, in our classroom discussions, lectures, and other activities. Each time we practice these skills early in the semester, think about how you will transfer the skills to the Research Project.
The Four Stages

-Write 2-3 pages total, label each step below (a, b, c) as you answer ityou might need to write more for some steps than others, just keep it to 2-3 pages combined. Type your responses, double spaced. Due date is on the syllabus.
a. Identify a controversial topic that Americans are currently debating that has important social implications. Choose something that is interesting and relevant to you. Explain three different perspectives or opinions on the topic (these do not have to be your own, they can be the opinions of anyone youve heard talk about the subject). There are two restrictions on the topic you choose: first, it cannot be a topic that we have extensively discussed together in class and second, it has to be a topic that has important social implications for a broad group of Americans. b. Explain why you are interested in this topictell me why it matters to you, and as you do this, explain your initial opinion on the topic.

c. Explain what baggage you bring in with you that might make you biased (past experiences, prior beliefs, etc… that influence your opinion before youve done any research). Secondly, explain what baggage you bring in with you that might better help you understand the topic (some sort of experience/perspective/exposure that gives you unique insight).
d. Define at least one very clear question (more than one if necessary) that you want to answer as you do your research. This is where you need to connect it to history. All of you are essentially asking, how can history help me better understand this debate? But, take that question and apply it specifically to your topic.

changes of the time period and the thesis and explain whether you think this time period might be relevant to your topic.
-Look through the section headings in each chapter, and identify anything that you believe might be relevant to your topic. Explain why you think it might be relevant (just add this to the summary you write for each introduction).
b. Find and Review First Sources: Write no more than 3 pages total, typed double spaced. Please label this, Find and Review First Sources)
-Using the work you did in part a (textbook chapter summaries), start searching for books and articles that are relevant to your topic. Find 2 books and 2 journal articles, and write a summary of each source, identifying the main topic/thesis of each source, and explaining how its relevant to your topic.
c. Redefine Your Question: Write no more than a paragraph or two total, typed double spaced. Please label this Redefine Your Question.
-Now that you have done a little bit of research, reassess the question that you formed in Stage 1, and make any necessary adjustments to this question. What is now driving your research? Now that you are more familiar with the topic, what do you want to know?
