The Assignment For this assignment, you need to select one occupation and explore its history. It can be anything you like, but your selection should be fairly specific. You can, however, define it as broadly as needed in order to give some historical perspective on modern occupations. In order to complete the paper, you will do it in a few steps. Each of these steps will be graded and, in total, the steps before the final paper will count for the same amount as the second paper listed in the syllabus. 1. Select an occupation. This needs to be a pretty specific definition. You cant say youd be interested in the history of businesspeople. Instead, pick something more specific: office manager; salesperson; chemical engineer; doctor; whatever. Dont be so specific that you cant write its history, however. You must submit a proposed occupation by Wednesday, October 31. Submissions must be made in Canvas. Your submission should include a brief description of the occupation, any earlier iterations of the job you are considering, and a brief explanation of why you have selected it. 2. Begin researching the history of the occupation using library (books and articles) and internet resources. Do not limit yourself to internet resources. Papers that rely solely on internet resources will not receive better than C. Collect a brief bibliography of sources that you plan to consult in writing your paper. You must submit a brief bibliography of sources by Wednesday, November 14. Your bibliography should list all sources you plan to use in Chicago style. 3. Write your brief history (5-6 pages) of the occupation. Your paper should include a brief description of the occupation and an exploration of its historical development (especially focusing on that history in the U.S.). Questions your paper should consider: a. What did the job entail? How has that changed over time? b. Who did the job? How did that changed over time? c. What were the conditions of employment? d. Have there been attempts to organize workers in that occupation? When? Where? How successful were they? e. How did training for the job change over time?
