The Module 4 SLP requires that you run a simulation entitled: The Platform Wars: Simulating the Battle for Video Game Supremacy. Visit the Forio site, and access the simulation here: https://forio.com/simulate/mit/video-game/simulation/ Click on Play as an individual. Enter your first name as the Screen ID, then click Login. In this web-based simulation, you are a senior manager of a video game hardware platform producer. Each year, you have three decisions to make: and 3.Determine the royalty percentage you will require game makers to pay you (the higher the royalties, the more revenue you earn on new games, but the less inclined game makers are to develop new games). At the start of the simulation, your market share is 50%. The price of your video game console is $250.00 (note that your competitors market share is 50%, but your competitors console price is $370.00 (hint: you are vastly underpriced to begin the simulation). As the CEO, it is your task to make decisions one year at a time. As you do so, note how key data are changing, and take note of how your pricing, changes made to royalties, and new game subsidies change your profits and your market share. You may need to go through at least one practice run of the simulation in order to become familiar with it. One way of becoming familiar with the simulation is to change only value, leaving the others constant. This will isolate the impact of one variable, and will give you a sense of how the change in a single variable impacts revenue, market share, etc. (use the Dashboard and the financial statements to determine this). For example, if I leave all variables unchanged in Year 1 (price = $240; Game titles to subsidize = 3, and Royalties = 15%), my market share becomes 69% at the end of Year 1 (and my net profit is $48.0M). In contrast, if I reduce the console price to $230, my market share becomes 71% at the end of Year 1 (and my net profit is $33.6M). Importantly, if I increase my console price to $330, my market share at the end of Year 1 is 58%; however, my net profit is $140.8M! As the CEO, your task is to find the best combination of changes in the three variables that both increases your market share and earns a maximum net profit. Remember that the changes are relative; there are no right or wrong answers. Your goal is to use the knowledge you have acquired from previous courses (Accounting, Marketing, Finance, etc.), and allow the various statements and the Dashboard to guide you in your analysis, accumulating high market share and revenue. Be sure to take note of how the statements may be used to control your strategy! Remember that you need to cover your costs, while simultaneously turning a profit and increasing your market share. SLP Assignment Expectations As the CEO, you are asked to run the simulation a minimum of three (3) times, noting the changes made each year, as well as your final results. Then, write a 2- to 3-page memorandum to your Board of Directors, informing them of how changes in the variable (e.g., the price of the console; royalties paid by the game maker; and changes in the number of game titles subsidized) affect total market share, revenue per year, and net profit per year. Be creative, and include some tables and graphs in your written analysis to show your changes and/or results.
Term Project Part 2 The goal of the strategy term project is to give you practical experience with the elements of strategic management. In this first module, you will identify a firm to study for this project. We suggest you select one company and use it for each module in this term project. Choose a firm that you find interesting or one that is part of an industry you would like to know more about. Throughout the modules, you will be required to obtain and analyze a significant amount of data about the firm. Therefore, a key criterion is also to choose a firm that has data available for you to gather. The primary approach to this project is to select a publicly held firm. Many large firms (for example, Apple, Google, and GE) have been widely reported on in the business and popular press, and a wealth of information is available on them. Other medium-sized public firms, such as Tesla Motors, Netflix, and BlackBerry, can be used as example firms for this project. One cautionary note: For firms that are less than three years public or in industries that are not well-defined, it will take extra effort to properly identify such items as competitors and suppliers. But if it is a firm you are truly motivated to study, the effort can be quite rewarding. For this assignment: Study the external environment of the firm you have previously selected for this project. Are any changes taking place in the macroenvironment that might have a positive or negative impact on the industry in which your company is based? Identify the core competencies that are at the heart of the firms competitive advantage. (Remember, a firm will have only one, or at most a few, core competencies, by definition.) Perform a SWOT analysis for your firm. Remember that strengths and weaknesses (S, W) are internal to the firm, and opportunities and threats (O, T) are external. Prioritize the strategic actions that you would recommend to your firm. Refer to the Implications for the Strategist section on how to conduct a SWOT analysis and provide recommendations building from strategic alternatives. Requirements: Must be in APA format (size 12 font, double-spaced, Times New Roman, Title page, Body, Reference page). Must have at least three references used. At least one reference should be from a database such a Proquest or Ebscohost (which is available in the SHARC Library). (Links to an external site.) Links to an external site.
Discuss the appropriateness of these data analysis and explain why these techniques are better for this study than other types of data analysis methods. Comment on the fit between the statistical method, the research question, the sample size, and the type of measures used. Describe the reliability and validity of your measuring instruments.
Description The Strategic Management Living Case Study is your opportunity to apply the core concepts of this course to a selected organization for which you or one of your classmates works. It allows you to learn by doing. And, it helps you to develop a set of recommendations for how the organization can change for the better (improve) by applying these core concepts to the strategic management process. You will be placed in a study group of 5-10 students and assigned an organization to study. Each week you will be given instructions for study group work and individual work. In the real world, strategy work is done in teams, and at the same time individual leaders and managers must have a capacity to understand strategy, think strategically, and participate in its formulation, implementation, and evaluation. The weekly instructions are designed to guide you like a detailed recipe guides a chef in preparing a great dinner. If you follow the instructions faithfully and work diligently each week, then you will be taking progressive steps toward completion of your individual strategic case study write-up. A comprehensive strategy case write-up is the traditional standard expected of a strategy capstone course for a BBA degree, and we are working to help each of you be very successful in this project! A Living Case Study Guide is provided in your course pack. It shows with each of the steps you will need to complete each week in working toward your final case study paper. Your weekly work is contributing toward the final course paper. A Living Case Study Template (in Microsoft Word format) is also provided in your online material. In it, you can place your weekly (individual) work, and continually integrate it, interpret it, and revise it, until you make your final submission at the end of the semester. The template has three major sections: Executive Summary, Strategic Analysis, and References. You will begin by performing a strategic analysis, the results of which will be documented in the Strategic Analysis section. The components of the Strategic Analysis are based on the strategic management concepts covered in the course, and are outlined in the template in the order in which they are covered. As you have the entire semester to prepare the case study, you should be working on it throughout the course, as you learn the course concepts. The Analysis section may be of any length that is necessary for you to capture the material you need for each of the components. On completion of the Analysis, you will summarize and interpret your findings and make your recommendations in the Executive Summary section of the template. This section should be approximately two (and no more than three) pages. The English composition of the paper will count meaningfully toward your grade, so think deeply, write briefly, and write well! Be certain to document all sources used in your case study in the References section of the template, using standard APA format. Any time you use information from any of the sources in your content, be certain to provide an in-text citation for the source. While you will be stating your findings and making recommendations in your Executive Summary, your Living Case Study is a confidential document that will only be shared with those assessing it. (Of course, you are free to use it however you wish. You may share it with the organization as a way of offering ideas for improvement, or you may keep your thoughts and your study to yourself. It is your decision.) Objectives To successfully complete this case study, you are expected to: 3. Assess the effectiveness of the strategies currently being pursued. 4. Develop future strategies for the organization to be pursued. 5. Formulate recommendations based on research and analysis. Project Requirements Your case study will be assessed on the extent to which it meets the following requirements. These requirements address your specific mastery of the course content as well as broader competencies such as writing and research skills. Please refer to the following rubric for the specific point allocation for these requirements. Rubric (WC: Written Communication. 1-9: Session Numbers.
