Diabetes is a group of metabolic disorders and or group of diseases in which blood sugar levels are high over a prolonged period and may also affect how your body makes use of blood sugar. It is an overwhelming disease that is affected by genes, social, cultural, economic, and life style factors. According to Chow et al. (2013), nearly 26 million Americans are living with diabetes and 79 million American have pre-diabetes. 4.9 million African- American adults, twenty years of age and older have been diagnosed or undiagnosed with diabetes. African- Americans have a higher risk of having diabetes than non-Hispanic white Americans. In 2006 it was noted that African Americans were one and a half times more likely to be hospitalized and 2 times more likely to die from the disease.
Summarize the two advocacy campaigns you researched in this area.
The American Diabetes Association, ADA, an example of an advocacy, made multiple accomplishments in 2017. In 2017 the ADA raised their voices at the state level by participating in hundreds of meetings, briefings, Diabetes Days at State Capitols, submitting letters, and statements in support of legislative and regulatory priorities which led to setting the record of 70 wins in states across the country (.). The ADA also mobilized advocates at unparalleled levels regarding healthcare, insulin affordability, and funding for research and programs. For example, the ADA is pushing for support of, Eliminating Disparities in the Diabetes Prevention, Access, and Care Act, if legislature is passed the National Institutes of Health would have to research risk factors of diabetes causes in minority populations, pregnancy, newborn minority children, and any environmental risk factors.
Another perfect example of advocacy at work is the persistence and determination of the Diabetes Advocacy Alliance, DAA. In April 2011 the DAA alongside Novo Nordisk sponsored an advertising campaign that urged Congress and Administration to support the National Diabetes Prevention Program at the CDC. The advertisement, Lets Prevent Diabetes made use of print, radio ads, and visual provocative tactics to engage listeners. In conclusion, Congress funded the National Diabetes Prevention Program with $10 million. Explain the attributes that made those campaigns effective.
According to Kelly (2017), there are five essential steps to planning an advocacy campaign which include setting a goal, defining the message, building a team, mapping a timeline, and developing communications and activities.
