Activision Blizzard: Strategic Alternatives and Recommendations

Please use three journals and one internet source. 1) Identification and description of critical issues: What are the critical issues the firm is currently facing or may face in the near future? The critical issues can be a negative aspect such as increased competition but also a potential positive aspect such as the implementation of a new technology that they should consider in the future. The section should provide good overview of what the issues currently look like and also why these issues can be of grievous problems or lost opportunities if not addressed properly. 2) Assessing the root cause: There is a reason that the issues became critical. What is the history or series of events that led the firm to face the critical situation? Could anything have been done differently to ameliorate the difficulties the firm currently faces or may face in the future? Knowing the root cause of the problems can be helpful in deriving at sound solutions. 3) Strategic alternatives: What are some options (at least two per strategic issue) the firm may consider in trying to overcome the critical issues? There rarely is a perfect solution so it would be helpful to assess the cost and benefit of each of the strategic alternatives. What may be some of the obstacles in following a particular strategic alternative? 4) Executing the recommendations: Based on the alternatives provided in the previous section, what is your groups recommendation to resolve each of the issues? Why do you support the alternatives you chose over the other options? What may be the action plan to implement your recommendations?

Choosing a Performance Appraisal System

[U08a1] Unit 8 Assignment 1 HR Challenge: Choosing a Performance Appraisal System Scenario You are a newly hired HR professional in a medium-size company, which is a video gaming company that is globally recognized as a leader and groundbreaking competitor. It is a young firm that has grown quickly, from one having no HR staff to having five HR professionals supporting over 700 employees and a performance appraisal system that has been in place for several years. The management team is not all that comfortable with any system of appraisal but has accepted that one is required. The organization currently has a healthy employee engagement program. Part of the program is a yearly organizational satisfaction survey that over time has provided employee input about what they perceive as a lack of performance appraisal effectiveness. Employees feel the current performance appraisal system is not capable of identifying struggling and failing employees. At the same time, it is also described as not having the capacity to recognize the best performers in the organization. That is, there is a stated desire from employees for a performance appraisal system that can better differentiate performance outcomes. The current performance appraisal system is similar to the traditional academic evaluation system with five levels of performance: superior, outstanding, contributing substantively, developing, and needing improvement. The leadership in the organization insists that a new three-level (superior, contributing substantively, and needing improvement) will favorably respond to the employees’ viewpoint. This new appraisal system that tracks the assignment of each level by employee would limit how many high threes would be given every year, thus most people in the organization would fall into the category of contributing substantively. Your Challenge As an HR professional in the organization, you desire the best outcome for your organization and its employees, and are not sure if this three-level system would be best. Your challenge is to select the best course of action among the following options and recommend that action to the leadership team. You can recommend 1) they retain the current five-level performance appraisal system, 2) they adopt the three-level system with forced-distribution preferred by the leadership team (superior, contributing substantively, and needing improvement), or 3) an alternative. Assignment Instructions Prepare a 23-page plan that states your recommended course of action. Along with your recommendation, include the following: An analysis of how your proposed solution contributes to organizational goals and strategies. A description of the legal factors you considered in making your decision. A brief explanation of?? the role you will take to influence the eventual outcome. Consider aspects of leadership, negotiation, and consultation. A discussion of? the two SHRM behavioral competencies you think are most directly applicable to a successful resolution of this challenge, and why. Review the HR Challenge: Choosing a Performance Appraisal System Scoring Guide to see the criteria by which your assignment will be evaluated. Use the Internet to find some initial velocities for different types of fireworks. What are some of the initial velocities that you found?

Directions: You are part of a fireworks crew assembling a local fireworks display.
There are two parts to the fireworks platforms: one part is on the ground and the
other part is on top of a building. You are going to graph all of your results on one
coordinate plane. Make sure to label each graph with its equation. Use the following
equations to assist with this assignment.
The function for objects dropped from a height where t is the time in
seconds, h is the height in feet at time it t, and 0 h is the initial height is
2
0 ht t h ( ) 16 = + .
The function for objects that are launched where t is the time in seconds, h is
the height in feet at time t, 0 h is the initial height, and 0 v is the initial velocity
in feet per second is 2
0 0 ht t vt h ( ) 16 = + + .Task 1
First, conduct some research to help you with later portions of this portfolio
assessment.
Find a local building and estimate its height. How tall do you think the
building is?
Task 2
Respond to the following items.
1. While setting up a fireworks display, you have a tool at the top of the
building and need to drop it to a coworker below.
a. How long will it take the tool to fall to the ground? (Hint: use the first
equation that you were given above, 2
0 ht t h ( ) 16 = + . For the buildings
height, use the height of the building that you estimated in Task 1.)
b. Draw a graph that represents the path of this tool falling to the
ground. Be sure to label your axes with a title and a scale. Your graph
should show the height of the tool, h, after t seconds have passed.
Label this line Tool.
2. State whether the parabola represented by 2 ht t t ( ) 16 250 = + opens up or
down. Explain why your answer makes sense in the context of this problem.
3. One of the fireworks is launched from the top of the building with an initial
upward velocity of 150 ft/sec.
a. What is the equation for this situation?
b. When will the firework land if it does not explode?
c. Make a table for this situation so that it shows the height from time
t = 0 until it hits the ground.
d. Calculate the axis of symmetry.
e. Calculate the coordinates of the vertex.
f. Explain why negative values for t and h t( ) do not make sense for this
problem.
g. On the same coordinate plane from #1, draw a graph that represents
the path of this firework. Make sure that your graph is labeled
appropriately. Label this graph Firework #1.
4. Choose an initial velocity for a firework based on your research from Task 1
a. Write an equation that represents the path of a firework that is
launched from the ground with the initial velocity that you chose.
b. Suppose this firework is set to explode 3 seconds after it is launched.
At what height will this firework be when it explodes?
c. On the same coordinate plane that you have been using, draw a graph
that represents the path of this firework. Mark your graph to indicate
the point at which the firework will explode. Label this graph Firework
#2.
5. You launch a third firework. Decide whether you want to launch it from the
ground or from the roof of the building. Also, choose a height at which this
firework will explode and an initial velocity for this firework.
a. How long after setting off the firework should the delay be set?
b. On the same coordinate plane that you have been using, draw a graph
that represents the path of this firework. Mark your graph to indicate
the point at which the firework will explode. Label this graph Firework
#3.
6. What can you conclude about how the height of the building and the initial
velocity of the item launched affect the maximum height and the time it
takes to get there?Task 3
You will submit the following items.
results of your research, including the height of the building that you found
and initial velocities for fireworks
a graph that shows the paths of the tool that was dropped and the three
fireworks that were launched
responses to the items in Task 2
