Assignment: In the past weeks, we trained our rhetorical analysis skills in media examples, exploring the ways in which rhetors use the rhetorical situation to deliver messages in different media examples. We continued to practice identifying the specific components of the rhetorical situation and articulating how rhetors use the situation to further a claim in different medias. For this assignment, you will apply your rhetorical analysis skills to a media example of your choosing. Your media choice should be on the same theme as your textual analysis, but you may choose an example from any genre of media. I will advise you to choose a shorter genre (e.g., a YouTube video in lieu of a feature film) because of the brevity of this assignment. You may choose an example that you wrote about in your media journal if that example is on the same theme as your textual analysis. Once you choose your thematic example, you will write a 3-4 page, MLA-formatted essay in which you present a rhetorical analysis of your media example.
Method: To write this essay, you will rely on the skills you learned in the textual analysis, those of analyzing a work for the rhetorical situation, and you will also rely on your ability to narrate and describe specific aspects of your media example. Your essay will illustrate how the rhetor uses the rhetorical situation to convey a specific message. Your essay must show how the components build on each other and with each other throughout in the example, and you must correctly identify, define, and illustrate the components of the rhetorical situation in your writing. You must also evaluate the effectiveness of the rhetorical situation in your selected media example.
To do this, you should use the guiding questions below. You do need to answer all the questions in the body of your essay; however, you should address them in an order that best fits your organizational needs and leads your reader logically to your evaluation.
Who is the rhetor? What ethos does the rhetor have on the topic? Remember, that for a media sample, you may have to infer this from the example itself.
Who is the audience? What is the rhetor seeking from the audience? Does the author use pathos to evoke a response from the audience?
What is the rhetors subject? How is this situated within the context of the work? What is the rhetors exigence?
What genre did the rhetor select? How is the genre effective to the audience? Would a different genre be more effective or more kairotic?
How does the rhetor use logos in the work? How does the logos support the rhetors message and exigence, or does it not?
Does the rhetor make the most of the rhetorical situation in the work? Explain your evaluation.
Assessment: Your essay has the possibility of 50 points toward your Essay grade. These points are earned based on the following criteria:
The essay is guided by an articulate thesis that frames the work (5 points)
The essay presents a clear analysis of the rhetorical situation in a media example (on the same theme as the students previous essay) that defines and identifies all components of the rhetorical situation in the chosen text (15 points)
The essay uses specific evidence from the chosen media example to illustrate the components of the rhetorical situation (15 point)
The essay organization guides the audience through the rhetorical situation and justifies the evaluation in a logical structure (10 points)
Correct MLA formatting, including in-text citations and the Works Cited page, in an essay of no less than 3 full pages with minimal (3 or fewer) grammar and mechanics errors (5 points)
The term report is an individual assignment. You must select one company that
produces a consumer good or service; you could pick anything from a local pizza shop
to a major airline. You will construct a profile of its place in the economy. In addition to
providing a brief introduction to the companys operations and product(s), you should
answer the following three questions and provide a justification for your responses:
2) What type(s) of consumers does the company sell its products to? How would
you describe consumer demand in this market? Are consumers likely to be
sensitive to price changes or to changes in other factors?
3) How does the market structure of the industry affect the price that the firm
charges for its products? Does the firm have a clear pricing strategy?
The purpose of this assignment is to provide each student the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to think theologically (using scripture, tradition, and reason) about a modern ethical issue. In the case of this paper, the modern ethical issue to be considered is the environment.
This is not a research paper. Rather, the assignment is to apply your own thinking, your reading of McGrath, lecture notes, and your reading of Laudato Si (Pope Franciss Encyclical on the environment) to show how faith might influence ones attitude toward modern environmental problems.
Paper Format:
The paper should include a title page with your name.
The total length should be 3-4 pages, not including the title page.
The paper should be double spaced at 12 point font size.
The paper must be typed and delivered to the instructor in the form of an an email attachment or a hard printed copy. Hand-written essays will not be accepted.Answer each of the following questions with approximately one to three paragraphs:
Question 2: What do McGrath and Chapter 2 of Laudato Si (especially parts 1-3 of Chapter 2) add to your understanding of the above question?
Question 3: How does tradition inform a proper Christian concern for the environment? (At the very least, one should note how Franciss predecessors articulate the modern environmental problem discussed in the introduction to Laudato Si.)
Question 4: In Chapter 4 of Laudato Si, Francis discusses what he calls an integral ecology. How might this concept of an integral ecology influence our approach to specific environmental problems? (To answer this question, you might want to discuss a specific environmental issue such as pollution or deforestation.)
Question 5: How, in Franciss view, is a concern for the environment a matter of justice? (Discussed especially in Chapter 4 of Laudato Si).
Question 6: Are any specific parts of Franciss argument compelling in light of your own thinking? If so, how might an ecological conversion apply to our desires and actions?
