Rumors and Riots: An Eyewitness Account of the Tulsa RiotIn 1921, a race riot ripped Tulsa, Oklahoma, apart. And it all began with a rumor (Gates 2004).

Up to this time, Tulsas black community had been vibrant and prosperous. Many blacks owned their own businesses and competed successfully with whites. Then on May 31, everything changed after a black man was accused of assaulting a white girl. Buck Colbert Franklin (Franklin and Franklin 1997), a black attorney in Tulsa at the time, was there. Here is what he says: Hundreds of men with drawn guns were approaching from every direction, as far I could see as I stood at the steps of my office, and I was immediately arrested and taken to one of the many detention camps. Even then, airplanes were circling overhead dropping explosives upon the buildings that had been looted, and big trucks were hauling all sorts of furniture and household goods away.Unlike more recent U.S. riots, these were white looters who were breaking in and burning the homes and businesses of blacks.Franklin continues:

explore the coming of the Civil War by examining two speeches given just prior to the start of the Civil War:

John Smith Preston’s speech to the Virginia state legislature, and Abraham Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address. Both represent two very different perspectives about the nature of the Union and who is responsible for dividing the nation. Your goal will be to read through both speeches and discuss the major themes and arguments made in each document. DISCUSSION READINGSJohn Smith Preston on SecessionAbraham Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address, 1861 INSTRUCTIONS
You will read the above two speeches (John Smith Preston, Abraham Lincoln), and answer all of the following questions in your essay: a) JOHN PRESTON SMITH: Is it legal for southern states to secede from the Union? What has the North done to cause southern states to leave the Union? andb) ABRAHAM LINCOLN: Can states break away (secede) from the Union? Why or Why not? What are Lincoln’s views toward the South? What are his duties as President of the United Sates? Your essay should be a minimum of 3 pages, and you should spend AT LEAST one page discussing EACH position (one page discussing the Preston perspective and one page discussing the Lincoln perspective). If you want a higher grade, plan to be comprehensive in your coverage of the readings (there is no maximum page limit). Your answer should reflect the main points from both readings, and use examples from the documents to illustrate your main points. Be sure to proof your essay before submitting it as errors in grammar and spelling will lead to a deduction in points. Use quotations when using the exact wording from the reading and cite the reading at the end of the sentence [ex: if you quoted from the Lincoln reading, simply put (Lincoln, 2) at the end of the sentence which shows me which document and page the quote is from]. As per the instructions in the syllabus, most of the essay should be in your own words and include your own analysis of the readings.

that which is developed from your Research Topic and Annotated Bibliography (note topics that cannot be written about, as stated below and in the Research Topic assignment).Number of Sources: at least 7 different sources cited in your essay. In order to be eligible to receive an “above expectations” on the “research” category of the rubric, you should include the following among the 7 sources: at least 1 book/anthology (not encyclopedias) and 4 journal articles; at least 1 primary source; at least 5 sources should be scholarly sources; no more than 1 website source; no more than 1 newspaper article. Be aware that you will turn in copies of your sources, so make sure to keep track of them and print them out. Page Length: 7-10 pages, typed and double-spaced, not including title page or source pages. Citations: You will be using MLA or APA. style, depending on your topic. Remember that the academic discipline youre writing about determines which citation style you use. In addition, you are limited to two quote-worthy quotes maximum in the paper, if any. Paraphrase and summary are the primary means of incorporating information. Other Requirements: You must include one self-made statistical representation (graph, table, pie chart, etc.) in the text of the essay. This means that you take information and present it in a visual way. Copying and pasting a table or graph from another source doesnt count. See our textbook for information on creating and formatting visuals.Assignment: It’s time to explore your perspective on your research topic. This means that you need to look at possible angles of your research topic in order to decide on your focus. Once you have a sense of your topic, youll provide information on this aspect through integrated research. This paper is not only informative and persuasive, but it is an argument paper. One of the biggest problems people have with this paper is that they do not make an argument.Topics that cannot be written about are as follows. These were already specified in the Research Topic Instructions:abortion: overdone, inherent bias
illegal immigration/immigration: overdone, inherent bias
death penalty: overdone
global warming: it’s accepted truth, so you can’t argue it
genetically modified food/genetically modified organisms: overdone
body image & media: overdone
obesity: overdone
same-sex marriage: inherent bias
violence & media/videogames: overdonePart of the reason these topics are excluded is also because of the rise of plagiarism on these topics.Procrastinators: You will dig yourself a deep, deep hole if you wait until the last minute. See the research timetable if you need help keeping a schedule, and see me if you are struggling at any stage.
Arguing a PointThis is an argument paper which means that it should present organized, relevant data; summarize or explain the topic; develop a stance on the thesis; present well-founded opinions, interpretations, logic; clarify sources used in arriving at conclusions. Here are some general tips for an argument paper:State your thesis clearly.
In your introduction, be careful to avoid alienating readers who may be in initial disagreement with your views.
Strike a reasonable tone.
Develop your arguments with as much specific and relevant evidence as possible.
Attempt to refute opposing arguments or at least to explain why they are less weighty than your own arguments.
Where possible, build common ground with readers who may not be inclined to agree with you. Avoid common mistakes in reasoning.PlanningConsider your readers. How much do your readers know about your topic? Are they interested in it? Do they have strong opinions about it? Do not assume that your readers have read the sources you have read.
Keep in mind your purposeto persuade your readers to accept your position.
Interweave your sources into your paper to substantiate your thesis. Be careful, however, not to rely exclusively on one source. Verify the accuracy of your information and quotations. Miscues can undermine the credibility of your thesis. Organization
Organize your argument so that it is most beneficial to your purpose. However, no matter how your organization turns out, your argument should include the following:an interesting, eye-catching, relevant title

Review Drehers book according to the following prompt: What is Drehers purpose in writing a memoir about reading Dantes Commedia, what are the strengths and weaknesses of his personal memoir approach to interpreting Dante?

2-3 double-spaced pages; size 12 Times New Roman font, 1- inch margins.
Include your name on the top of the first page only; no further identifying information is needed.
Submit the completed essay through the link on Moodle.
Rationale:
To expose you to a different school of interpreting Dantes Commedia from the more academic one we have pursued in class.
To give you the opportunity to review, assess, and critique a commentary on the Commedia as an informed readers
To model a form of existentially or personally engaged reading of classical texts, and provide a model for the final reflection assignment
Goals:
To be able to articulate accurately Drehers goals for writing this memoir, and to summarize and assess Drehers approach to reading the Commedia in a way that made a difference to his life;
To charitably but critically engage Drehers interpretation of the Commedia based on your informed reading of the poem earlier in the semester.
Suggested Structure:
A. Introduction
1. What kind of book has Dreher written and
why? What is this books purpose?
2. A brief summary of the books narrative/
argument
B. Strengths
1. At least one or two strengths of Rods approach to reading and interpreting Dante
2. Include specific examples of those strengths and explain why they are strengths
C. Weaknesses
1. Same as Strengths but focused this time of
the weaknesses of Drehers approach to interpreting Dante. D. Conclusion
1. Summary of the review
2. An assessment of the books value and suggested readership
Suggestions for Success:
Do not call Drehers book a novel. It is a memoir. A novel is a work of fiction; this does not apply to Drehers book.
Make sure that you are reviewing the book, not the author. Drehers disagreeable personality comes through the writing; take care not to review him (as tempting as it may be!).
