to persuade an audience to at least consider your stance (or, in an ideal world, rally your audience into action along side you to fight for your stance)

Audience: People that disagree with you (you will need to narrow this down even more and identify your target audience at the top of the first page of your essay, below the title)
Sources:
At least 5 of your sources need to be from scholarly journals, credible books/anthologies, or reference materials, such as subject encyclopedias.
At least 5 more sources need to be included that are up to you, but they do need to be credible. Do not forget about sources such as: interviews, surveys, videos, lectures, documentaries, radio shows, and debates. Assignment: After completing your Annotated Bibliography, you should now have the necessary background and context in order to choose an argumentative stance. It makes sense that you might use some of the sources from that assignment in this paper; however, you are not required to use all of them. You need to decide which sources offer information that is the most relevant to your rhetorical strategy and then use them (whether through direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary) where appropriate in this paper. Your paper should cite a minimum of ten credible sources, but more are strongly encouraged. Your argument should be a synthesis of your sources, your own insights, and your own logical reasoning. Crafting a Thesis
A strategic thesis statement is essential to a successful paper. Your thesis should indicate what you are arguing (your claim or stance) and it should include an enthymeme. For example, here is a strong thesis that includes an enthymeme. Consider the topic of fluoridating a towns drinking water. You could take a stance that argued against it by presenting evidence of its problems, by connecting a reason to a conclusion. You could then make a proposal that other community strategies could be implemented that might strengthen poor childrens teeth without medicating the local water system. Consider the following example:
Concession/Rebuttal
As you can see from this example, a concession is included in the thesis. A great argument always includes a concession to the opposing view and then a direct rebuttal to that view. Your essay needs to have at least one concession with a rebuttal included, but by incorporating even more can only strengthen your argument. You do not have to include your concession/rebuttal in the thesis, but that is one rhetorical strategy. Rhetorical Triangle
Dont forget to argue logically (logos), connect with your audience (pathos), and establish your credibility/authority (ethos). When reviewing your draft, consider the components that you will be graded on: focus, development and support, organization, and mechanics. Focus involves creating a viable thesis and making sure the rest of the paper is organized around that thesis. Also consider: Is each topic sentence an arguable statement? Does each topic sentence support the overall stance? Does each paragraph revolve around one, central point?Development and support means that you have accurate, credible, and relevant evidence to support every claim that you make. The evidence should be followed up by your own commentary and analysis. Paragraphs need to be fully developed. Organization means that you are aware of the structure you have chosen for your argument and that it best suits your topic. It also means that the order in which you choose to bring up each of your points is logical and demonstrates a sense of an argumentative strategy. Make sure your sentences are clear and that the progression of one thought to the next is logical. Transition sentences and transition words are helpful to the audience so that they can follow your train of thought. Remember that not everyone thinks like you do, so you have to help your audience as much as possible. Format: Papers must be typed and double spaced with one inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman Font, and in MLA format.
