after reading the Spiegelman & Berrett book: Patients Come Second: Leading Change by Changing the Way You Lead, you will write and submit a major paper (8-10 pages, APA format) that summarizes the key issues and solutions of the book, identifying personally relevant and impactful thoughts and solutions and choosing the top 5-7 suggestions or ideas you would implement for greatest impact (and more importantly WHY).

The focus should be more on what you see as the key takeaways and impactful words of wisdom from the text and less of a ‘book report’.Not all key learning, especially as we advance into the higher echelons of management, come from textbooks. Introducing you to primers and quick-read books such as this are often quite instructive and since they are written in approachable language and a palatable length, it’s easier to get your managers/staff to engage this type of content.

Minor Project 1: Biblical & Economic Evaluation of Wages, Benefits, and Poverty
Assignment
Write a research paper of no more than 3,000 words addressing the roles of employers, employees and government in providing for the material well-being of the families of large-company employees.
Background
Recently, commentators have criticized large corporations such as Walmart, McDonalds and Amazon for not taking care of their employees, as evidenced by the fact that many of the employees receive government benefits designed to help low-income families. They say that employees and their families needing government assistance is a sign that the companies have offloaded their duty to pay a living wage onto the taxpayer through government programs.
Sen. Bernie Sanders says he will soon introduce legislation that would require large employers such as Amazon, Walmart and McDonalds to fully cover the cost of food stamps, public housing, Medicaid and other federal assistance received by their employees. The goal, he says, is to force corporations to pay a living wage and curb about $150 Billion in taxpayer dollars that go to funding federal assistance programs for low-wage workers each year. The bill would impose a 100 percent tax on government benefits received by workers at companies with 500 or more employees. For example, if an Amazon employee receives $300 in food stamps, Amazon would be taxed $300.

Details of Assignment
Your job is to apply a biblical and economic perspective to the issue raised by Bernie Sanders and others:
A biblical perspective to determine the responsibility and authority of each actorcompany, employee, employees family, and the community.
An economic perspective to determine the likely effects of various policy suggestions.
Consider the following topics/questions in your write up:
According to the Bible, what is the authority and responsibility of an individual for the financial support of himself/herself and his/her family? Under what circumstances would someone outside of the family have responsibility for the material support of that family? Is this always voluntary, or could the community mandate (perhaps through tax-supported government programs) that everyone contribute to supporting a needy family? What are the biblical principles and methods for delivering aid to a family with legitimate needs? What are the negative consequences of undermining an individuals incentive to work? What kinds of help will minimize those negative incentives?
According to the Bible, what is the responsibility of an employer regarding the wages and benefits of an employee? Many Bible verses exhort the master to not withhold payment of the agreed wage. Does the Bible comment on how much that agreed wage should be? Leadership research indicates that better-treated employees are more productive. An employer might provide extra benefits out of self-interest, wanting higher productivity, but would the employer have a biblical responsibility to provide those extra benefits?
What are the facts about worker pay, benefits, hours, and family situations? What is the profile of families/households who have a member working at a large-company and who receive government benefits? What is the profile of the employee whose family receives these benefitsage, education, skills/work experience, length of employment with this company, full-time/part-time, hourly wage rate, medical benefits from company, other benefits from company. Why does the employee remain with the company if pay and benefits are inadequate? How does the availability of government benefits that supplement wages and company benefits affect the employees decision about where to work and how many hours to work? Senator Sanders proposed tax on companies has similarities to a minimum wage increase, in that it increases labor costs beyond what current market conditions dictate. Based on your understanding of the effects of minimum wage increases, what effect would this policy have on low-wage earners in general? The tax proposal differs from a minimum wage increase in that it applies only to employees whose families receive government aid, rather than to all employees. How might this differential treatment of employees affect hiring decisions? What effect would that have on low-income families versus low-income individuals? Note: most policies have unintended side effects. Depending on how one views responsibilities, one could flip the Sanders argument. Instead of criticizing large companies because their employees receive government aid, one might praise them for providing some income to families who would otherwise need more government aid. That is, these companies are reducing the amount of aid required from the government. Comment on this idea. Some critics of large companies depend on a practical argument in addition to their fairness or duty argument. They say that the big companies are so profitable that they can afford to pay employees more, so they should. They say that poverty is bad, and big companies have the most money to solve the problem. How would you respond to this argument?
Researching and Writing the Minor Project 1 Paper
In addition to reading all of the assigned readings for Period 1, you should search the literature for several high quality reference sources using the methods described in How to write a research paper. Note that the guide to writing a research paper assumes that you have wide latitude to choose and define your topic. In the case of this paper, the topic is already defined. How to Write a Research Paper (found in Course Resources) will still help you through the process of finding appropriate references, taking notes, and constructing the paper. Start your search with the Regent University Library Database, which has many full-text scholarly articles. Websites may round out your thinking on the issue, but do not go to them first, and do not depend on them for accurate, reliable, insights on the topic. Very few, if any, of the resources that speak about wages and benefits at large companies will do so from a biblical perspective. You must provide that by doing an extensive review of the Scriptures to determine what the Bible says about this topic. You may use whatever format and style manual you normally use as long as you clearly credit sources of ideas and quotes in the body of the paper and provide a complete list of references at the end. It is of paramount importance that you clearly acknowledge the sources of ideas that are not your own. Anything less is plagiarism, which is Academic Dishonesty and carries severe penalties.
