Discussion 1: Accuracy in Financial Reporting

A sale is a sale, and a profit is a profit, right? Not always. While an organization’s financial statements should fully and transparently reflect the organization’s actual financial situation, sometimes they do not. Sometimes there is intentional deception or fraud. Yet, even when an organization uses legal and accepted accounting practices, financial statements may fail to present risks or explain unusual costs, profits, or assumptions.

To prepare for this Discussion, think about a time in your professional experience when a decision was made based on inaccurate financial information or unethical behavior resulting in fraudulent financial information. If you do not have professional experience directly related to accounting and decision making, research a situation where inaccurate or fraudulent financial information was provided by a company. Consider the outcomes of utilizing fraudulent financial information for decision making and research how to avoid such situations.

Post by Day 3, the following:

Describe the situation from either your professional experience or your research.
Explain the steps you would take to address unethical behavior and remedy the situation of utilizing the inaccurate or fraudulent financial information you described and why you would take these steps.
Explain the steps that you, as a manager, might take to ensure that all financial information you review accurately reflects the organization’s true financial situation and why this is important to prevent unethical behavior and the use of inaccurate or fraudulent financial information.

Keys to the Assignment

In the context of CSR, in what ways did Enron demonstrate – not social responsibility – but socialirresponsibility? Consider how the company’s actions ran counter to the tenets of CSR through its neglect of duty to the company’s shareholders, its employees, and even the larger public trust. Be sure to cite specific examples.
What have been the long-term consequences of Enron’s actions, and how did the company’s implosion change our view of what it means for a company to be “socially responsible”?

For Case 3, you will analyze the traffic gridlock case. Taking communication and collaboration into the next 20 years, Ford Motors has a vision to develop cars that rely on a network of communication systems. In the long term, Ford sees a radically different transportation landscape where pedestrians, bicycles, private cars, commercial and public transportation traffic will be woven into a single mobile network to save time, conserve resources, lower CO2 emissions, and improve safety.

In your readings on system dynamics, you have seen that in a system, different entities flow into and accumulate in stocks and then flow out, sometimes into another stock. This is similar to items in a queue or waiting line. But there are some aspects that are different from queues when comparing to system dynamics. For example, water cannot be analyzed using queuing theory, since you would have to track each molecule as you would track a person in a waiting line. Identify how queues are different than items flowing into and out of stocks as characterized by system dynamics.
