The purpose of this assignment is to investigate a professional journal in the field of fire prevention that interests you. The objective of your critique is to find an article and compare the information in the article to what you have been learning in class. Critique the article in terms of how the information within the article supports or disproves material that you have learned in this course. Please include the following topics in your critique of the selected article:

 a brief introduction and overview of the article,

 a description of how the article either supports or disproves material in the course,

 your point of view, and

 a summarization of your thoughts and suggestions in support of your opinion.

The selected article should not be more than four years old. You are encouraged to utilize the Research Databases found in the CSU Online Library located in the Course Menu. These databases will allow you to quickly search through thousands of journal articles. Students can access this information, as well as other CSU Online Library resources by selecting the My Library button located in the Course Menu.

One of the most beneficial exercises in a course exploring ethics is to develop a paper that allows you the opportunity to create connections between your personal view of ethics and the theory under discussion. The nature of ethical decision making encompasses recognition, analysis and resolution. We often don’t make a decision because it’s ethical, but rather, because it makes sense from our personal view of the situation. That is, ethical decisions happen “after the fact” as we begin to see the actual implications of the decision.

With this in mind, your paper should explore current ethical issues in the workplace that are relevant to your current career or the career that you are preparing to pursue. Your task is to begin to explore the possible issues within your workplace and choose one to focus on throughout the course as you begin to build your final paper. Please consider the following as possible approaches for this final paper:

Illustrate the impact of organizational goals and objectives, structure, culture, environment, ethics policies, and incentive systems on ethical behavior within an organization
Evaluate and revise an ethics program to increase ethical behavior within an organizational environment.
Create and systematically apply a defensible ethical moral framework to a contemporary ethics issue. To systematically apply the ethical moral framework, you must use the framework consistently as you describe the ethics issue. Explore the issue using the framework you create. HINT: This is done through the application of one of the theories we have read about in this module.

Management of Patient Access

Managing patient access has become both expensive and problematic. Discuss how a physician would manage patient access to care and contrast this with how an Accountable Care Organization (ACO) manages patient access to care. Discuss the pros and cons of each. Clearly outline the type of restrictions and limits of the new ACO paradigm.

Rely on peer-reviewed journals, the Federal Register, and the Library of Congress for your research and incorporate at least one new law or regulation (from the last twenty-four months) that addresses this issue.

Leaders as Change Agents

In this assignment, you will study the factors involved in making leaders change agents.

For the assignment, you will put well-known personalities and yourself under the microscope to learn what makes you and the individuals you select not only leaders but also what it takes for leaders to be change agents.

Using online library, the Internet, and periodicals such as Fortune, Business Week, and Forbes, research about the biographies, case studies, and articles of leaders.

Choose any two leaders who you consider to have been very successful change agents and two who you believe have been unsuccessful change agents. Write a brief biography of each of the leaders you selected.

In addition, answer the following questions regarding your chosen leaders:

What were the leaders’ bases of power? How was it gained? What was their reach or influence?
How did the leaders find themselves in the position to serve as change agents? Describe the situation, including the need for a change agent.
What mode did each leader operate in?
Were the leaders successful change agents?
What made the leaders successful or unsuccessful change agents?
What were the similarities between the two successful leaders and the differences between the two successful and two unsuccessful leaders?
Are there factors about the leaders you researched that might have predicted their success or failure before they achieved leadership roles? Explain at least three such factors.

Reflect

Choose a clip that you wish to analyze. The clip you choose must be from a film (preferably from a film with which you are familiar) – not a film trailer or a mash-up. Re-watch your chosen movie clip while closely observing the mise en scène. What analysis can you make about the placement and movement of characters and props in the scene as they relate to camera shots, color, lighting, and other elements of cinematography?

Write (due Thursday, Day 3)

In your discussion, analyze at least three elements of cinematography and editing (e.g., lighting, color, shots, focus, transitions, and types of cuts) by evaluating the dramatic impact of the scene. Interpret the scene based on your analysis. In your view, what mood, symbolism, or meaning results from the scene’s creative editing and cinematography?

Crime and justice are subjects that are frequently presented on television. Primetime television shows, soap operas, music videos, and cartoons often portray images of crime and criminal justice in a sensational manner or one of negativity. The pictures of police brutality and mistrust of law officials is prevalent because of the reality of cases that exist, especially in an era where information can be dispersed quickly and immediately via technology.

For this assignment, please list and discuss at least 6 television shows that you have seen that depict the police, courts, and correctional components of the criminal justice system (2 television shows for each component: law enforcement, judiciary, and corrections; for a total of 6 shows). If you prefer, you can use movies, radio, print media, or any combination of them, but there must be 2 examples that you must use to depict each of the 3 components of the criminal justice system for a total of 6 illustrations.

What stages of the criminal justice process are depicted in these programs? Why do you think the focus is on these stages?
Do you think these images are fair representations of criminal justice? Why or why not? Are the shows realistic with current-day criminal justice activities? Why or why not?

Discuss the advertising techniques implemented in each to help teach, to inform and to persuade consumers. Which do you feel is the most effective form of advertising and why? Identify the cues, or stimuli, used in the ads to direct consumer behavior. What responses do you think these brands are looking for from their viewers? How well was the three-hit theory implemented in these ads? Discuss your overall thoughts on brand positioning in these ads.

The performance appraisal process is intended to measures the degree to which an employee accomplishes work requirements. The majority of the management and HR professionals in U.S. organizations believe in the value of providing regular individual performance appraisals. DO THEY REALLY?

How often do you receive a performance appraisal or discuss your performance with your manager? Discuss the positive and/or negative experiences you have had when receiving performance appraisals. What opportunities for improvement existed?

Discuss how the news audience has changed from the 1970s until now. Do you feel that Americans can still find unbiased news anywhere today? Why or why not?
