What leadership traits do want your directors to have?

Assignment Instructions

Research Paper: Supervisory Skills

Your research paper is based on the following scenario:

You have just taken over as the head of Toyota’s Quality Control Department. You are a Vice President (VP) and answer directly to the CEO. You have seven directors that answer to you. Each director manages one of the following divisions:

1. Drive Systems (including brakes, axles, and wheels)

2. Electrical Systems

3. Safety Systems

4. Body and Chassis (including suspension)

5. Material (quality of all materials that go into making car / truck)

6. Manufacturing Equipment (all systems that go into making a car, the factory line)

7. Facilities (all the supporting facilities, paperwork, etc)

Each director has a group of inspectors and managers for their divisions.

The previous VP has been let go, for cause. The departments morale is very low and there is a great deal of pressure for each division to perform.

You are to develop a paper to present to the CEO that will outline how you are going to turn around the department (your department – hint – you are NOT in charge of production). You should include / address the following areas:

1. Short term (1 year) and long term (2-10 years) goals. Make sure they are SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound).

2. Any reorganization that you plan to do within your department.

3. Any assistance you will need from other departments.

4. Any training you will do with your department, and the company as a whole. (this ties into number three, since you will need to work with other departments)

5. An analysis of what challenges you will face. Think of this as a way of analyzing your potential pitfalls as your group undergoes change.

6. What leadership traits do want your seven directors to have?

Pick at least three. Why did you pick these traits? How will you ensure that the directors have or gain the required skills.

Your paper should be 3-5 pages (not including reference and title pages).

You should use proper APA sixth edition formatting.

Paper should contain no more than 20% direct citations or quotations. That means 80% should be your own analysis, thoughts, and ideas. Before submitting your paper, please make sure that it is checked using Turn It In checker (located at the bottom of the assignment’s turn in page)

What I Look For In a Research Paper

I WILL REFER TO THESE NINE POINTS WHEN GRADING YOURS

I want you to do well on this first assignment, but there are some rules you must follow, so this is what I am going to be looking for in your research paper, due at the end of week 4.

If you really want to do a good job on this then you MUST write from an outline, and if you’re unsure of how to write one, there are plenty of sites on the Internet.  In addition, I will be happy to look at yours as well as your draft of the paper before you submit it, so please call me with any questions.

  1. If you do not submit assignment 1, you automatically lose 14 percent.  If you fail to submit both assignments 1 and 2, you automatically lose 28 percent.  That’s three letter grades, which means that the highest grade you can receive in the course is a C, even if you get 100 percent on every other assessment.

  1. Your title must be the same as the assignment topic.  EXACTLY the same.

  1. Omit photographs and art work, but if you include graphs or tables, then you must explain them.

  1. Don’t begin with a history of the country or where it’s located or its main industries, agriculture, population, etc.  Get right to the point.

  1. Do not use any phrases that begin with “I think  . . .” or “In my opinion . . .” or “I knew someone who . . .”  This is a research paper, not an opinion piece.

  1. If you list a reference in the bibliography, it must be cited as a source in the text of the paper.  Ten references = ten citations in APA.

  1. Do not list URL (web) addresses either in the bibliography or as citations in the text.  Use the author’s name and date of publication.

  1. Do not quote long paragraphs, because they take up too much space.  Use few lines only and then paraphrase the rest.

  1. MAKE CERTAIN YOU SUBMIT A TURNITIN WITH LESS THAN A 20% SIMILARITY INDEX. OTHERWISE, I CAN’T READ YOUR PAPER FOR A GRADE.

Choose from the following:

President Kennedy 1961-1963 Respond flexibly to communist expansion, especially to guerilla warfare.

President Nixon 1969-1974 Supply weapons but not troops to countries fighting off communism.

Write a 5-7 page (1,250-1,750 word) essay that explains and evaluates 3-5 arguments on a controversial topic.

Write a 5-7 page (1,250-1,750 word) essay that explains and evaluates 3-5 arguments on a controversial topic. The arguments can be: i) for the same conclusion or ii) for contradictory conclusions. For example, you could examine two arguments for the conclusion that abortion is morally wrong and two arguments for the conclusion that abortion is not morally wrong. On the other hand, you could examine three separate arguments for the conclusion that abortion is morally wrong.

In order to explain an argument, I expect you to: i) state the argument in your own words (though, you can selectively use quotes to support your interpretation of the article), ii) state the argument in “Premise-Conclusion” form. [For example

P1- It is always morally wrong to kill human persons

P2- Abortion is the act of killing a human person

C- Therefore, abortion is morally wrong.]

iii) state whether the argument is best interpreted as an inductive or a deductive argument. Remember, you should attempt to interpret the argument in the best light possible; in other words, don’t state the argument in an obviously illogical way when it can be formulated in a stronger way.

In order to evaluate an argument, I expect you to: i) state whether the premises of the argument REALLY support/prove its conclusion  ii) identify the use of any rhetorical devices and/or fallacies that occur in the argument, iii) indicate whether the argument contains any false or implausible premises.

Sources: I would prefer you to choose arguments from newspaper, magazine, or journal articles. If you would like to use a book or an online source (not including online newspapers, magazines, etc.), please check with me. Predictably, Wikipedia articles are not permitted for this assignment.

Documentation Style: MLA or APA

Format: Double Spaced. 12 point normal font.
