Below are a few questions that should be considered in writing the essay.
1. Do you think Rachel Dewoskin is a reliable narrator? By ‘reliable’ it’s meant whether you can trust her as an observer of another culture.
2.In what ways does Dewoskin’s identity as an American evolve to include her experiences in China? Pin-point some moments when she finds herself doing, thinking, and saying things she never thought she would as an American.
3. The circle of friends she establishes in Beijing represents aspects of the cosmopolitan individual, but consider some instances in which they do not fit into that cosmopolitan model.
4. Describe a number of the cultural misunderstanding to come about near the end of Foreign Babes of Beijing. Do you think the ending of the book is an indication that nationalism and culture-bound identity will ever be a thing of the past?

In determining that response, many questions need to be answered. In an essay, explain the relevant questions you would pose as a realist, constructivist and feminist in attempting to determine the risk of violence escalating into ethnic conflict and perhaps even genocide, as well as the questions necessary to determine if humanitarian intervention is warranted or possible.

Tunisia and Egypt are beginning the process of creating new democratic political processes. In an essay, discuss the key principles of human rights as set out by international agreement that you would expect to see within any new democratic political system. Outline any particular problems that these international treaties may pose in the context of democratization in the Mideast. What key questions would you use as a feminist and a liberal in assessing the extent of democratization a year from now?
