Assignment 1: Organizational Analysis, Part 1

Select an organization(PEPSI COMPANY) (be sure to have your instructor’s approval by Week 3 before writing this paper) and write a 3-5-page paper

1. Describe the nature of the organization, its size, and any specific human resource challenges it faces. This answer is based on cited, factual information about the company, not your personal unsubstantiated opinions. There is no way to answer this question without a source for your information. Your discussion should included organizational challenges discussed in the text/class.

2. Describe the major legal concerns of the organization and recommend how those concerns should be addressed. What legal concerns did you find in your research and/or what do you feel are concerns the company should anticipate based on what you’ve learned thus far in class?

3. Determine how the organization should address current (or anticipated) human resource issues concerning expanding into international markets. What HR issues related to current/future global staffing has/should the company anticipate?

4. Make recommendations concerning how the organization can leverage its human resources to come out on top in a highly competitive environment. Think about the strategies we’ve just discussed. Has/is the company using one currently, what strategy from the text do you recommend for this company and why?

Instructions:
Obtain a current annual report for any U.S. company you are interested in analyzing. You may download it from its Website or from the LRC database called Mergent Online. Each student must choose a different company to analyze; therefore students must receive approval of the selected company from the professor by Week 5 of the class.

The Lean Startup Paper
Length: 4 pages – just 4, no more!
Format: Normal size fonts with normal margins, double spaced, typed. You will most likely be emailing this to me, so please make sure that when I print it, it will be four pages, legible, etc… (I should not need to do any formatting for you….)

Assignment:
Your task is to analyze BudiBar in terms of the methods/strategies that are put forth in the Lean Startup, by Eric Ries. The challenge will be to organize a well written paper in only 4 pages. Business writing needs to be concise and direct. You will need to cull what are the key issues espoused by the text and argue your points to that end.
A well-written paper will underline the first introduction of the theory (terms) from the book and put relevant page numbers in parenthesis in the sentence. Formal footnote techniques are not required in this effort.
Ex: (made up…) “ In looking at XYZ corp. their Minimal Viable Product – “MVP” (31) is a basic web page where the customers get an invitation to create an account and sign up for monthly email notifications that…… This version of their MVP will be essential because…….”
Note: You do not need to cite (page number) or underline each future occurrence to the phrase “MVP” …. Unless you referring to another technique or theory behind it.
Grading: Papers will be assessed on how well students incorporate the lessons from the Lean Startup into an analysis of the company. The paper should have some value – something that Michael could actually use/understand. You may assume the reader (me) has read the book and thus do not necessarily have to “define” the theory.

2. The Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring tells the tale of Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit who suddenly finds himself faced with an immense task: He must leave his home in The Shire and make a perilous journey across the realms of Middle-Earth to the Crack of Doom, deep inside the territories of the Dark Lord. There he must destroy the One Ring forever and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.

As Bilbo’s heir Frodo received the One Ring and accepted the quest of Ring-Bearer during the Council of Elrond. As Frodo sets out on his dangerous journey, he encounters difficult challenges and fearful obstacles. His mythical journey is also a quest: he must experience a rite of passage and accomplish a significant and wondrous feat to signify the end of childhood innocence. At the breaking of the Fellowship it was Frodo who decided to continue the quest alone and enter the land of Mordor.

The composition
Discuss the major elements of form in the image. What are the horizontal lines? How about the verticals? Diagonals? Any prominent triangles, circles, or squares? What lines or shapes catch the eye the most?

The picture space
Is the represented space flat or deep (is there recession into depth or does your eye stays on the surface? Is the horizon line high or low? Does a panoramic view suggest limitless space and thus freedom? Might a view from above looking down emphasize depth and therefore power? An omniscient point of view?

The color
What are the dominant colors in the image? Does one color link several areas of the picture? Does an important object blend in with or stand out from the surroundings? Do the colors seem symbolic in some way? For example, does a color suggest nature or sexuality?

The lighting
What are the brightest areas of the image? The darkest? Does the light seem to come from any particular location or is it diffuse and all-over? Is there an object that is brightly lit or in shadow? What about the rest of the image?

Present a formal description of your work. Use the description that you write while at the museum as the basis of this section of the paper. It is helpful to refer to Sylvan Barnett’s A Short Guide to Writing About Art (New York: Harper Collins College Publishers, 2009) for this section of your paper.
