Project 2:  Management Plan 

 

A management plan is a model that demonstrates how an organization operates on a day-to-day basis as well as over the long run.  A management plan is a report that includes numerous sections that cover various aspects of the business.

 

In this assignment students will take the role of the Vice President of Operation creating a mini-management plan that focuses on those aspects of the business related to planning and organizing.  As Vice President of Operations, Joseph Jackson, the leader of Cyber Software, Inc., has asked you to help him solve his organizational problems.  This mini-management plan is a professionally written document that will be given to Joseph Jackson.  In writing the plan, you must use the terminology learned in the course.  Since Joe Jackson is quite knowledgeable, you are not defining terms using a dictionary but you will explain and describe concepts and ideas so Joseph Jackson understands what you mean, why the ideas are important to the business and how to implement the proposed plan.  The plan is not one in which the Vice President of Operations tells Joseph Jackson that he should do this or do that or he needs to or will do this or do that but one that is presented in an action-oriented manner.  Students are expected to make connections between the facts of the case study and concepts, theories, and ideas presented in the course readings.

 

The mini-management plan will structure the entire company and will cover Joseph Jackson’s organization’s mission, vision, structure and culture.

Required Elements to Include in the Management Plan:

 

  • Provide a brief management history of Cyber Software, Inc.;

The final assignment for the course will be a research paper. The Research Paper will contribute 25% to the course grade.

Focus of the Research Paper

This final research paper must demonstrate the understanding of new learning in the field of project management and how it relates to purchasing and supply management. This is an assignment with a length of 10 – 12 pages that should integrate the reading, multi-media, and class discussion boards. It is mandatory to have research from the classroom text as well as at least five sources from reputable sources or online library to support your views.

Part 3: Final – 1,000+ words with scholarly sources including attached text

  • Explain the topic you are addressing and your position on it. Provide a preview of your paper and a statement of your thesis in your opening paragraph. [Approximately 100 words]
  • Present your main argument for your thesis in standard form, with each premise and the conclusion on a separate line. Clearly indicate whether your argument is intended to be inductive or deductive. Follow up the presentation of your argument by clarifying the meaning of any premises that could use some explanation. [About 150 words]
    • If your argument is deductive, then it should be valid (in the strict logical sense of the word); if it is inductive, then it should be strong. Make sure to avoid committing logical fallacies within your argument (e.g., begging the question). Additionally, the premises should be true, to the best of your knowledge. If one of your premises has a pretty obvious counter-example, then you should either fix the argument so that it does not have this flaw, or later, in your paper (steps three through five) you should address the apparent counter-example (showing that it does not really refute the truth of your premise). Arguments that are not valid, not very strong, commit fallacies, or that have counter-examples that are not adequately addressed will not receive full credit.
  • Provide supporting evidence for the premises of your argument. [Approximately 350 words]
    • Pay special attention to those premises that could be seen as controversial. Evidence may include academic research sources, supporting arguments (arguments whose conclusions are premises of the main argument), or other ways of demonstrating the truth of those premises. This section should include at least one scholarly research source.
  • Explain a strong objection to your argument. [Approximately 250 words]
    • Study what people on the other side of this question think about your reasoning and present the best possible objection that someone could have to your argument. Do not commit the straw man fallacy here. Reference at least one scholarlyresearch source. See the “Practicing Effective Criticism” section of Chapter 9 of the course text for more information.
  • Defend your argument against the objection. [Approximately 200 words]
    • Once you have presented the objection, indicate clearly how you might respond to it. It is acceptable to admit that reasonable people might disagree with you or that there might be an area in which your argument could be further strengthened, but you should do your best to explain why your argument is sound or cogent despite the objections.
  • Provide an appropriate conclusion. [Approximately 75 words]

Feel absolutely free to follow these up with any other sources that you find informative in helping you to make your case in a no less than 4-page paper in response to the following question:

Is it ethical for IT vendors such as Google to promote the use of their information technology products in pursuit of political revolutions in various countries?

Your paper should be between 8-10 pages total. Combine Parts I and II into a single report labeling each part accordingly.

Coordinating Instructions:

Take a definite stand on the issues, and develop your supporting argument carefully. Using material from the background information and any other sources you can find to support specific points in your argument is highly recommended; try to avoid making assertions for which you can find no support other than your own opinion.

Make sure to spell out the utilitarian and deontological considerations involved, and distinguish between them.

Be sure to provide proper citations for any material you reference from other sources!

Assessed on:

Precision: You see what the module is all about and structure your paper accordingly. You draw on a range of sources and establish your understanding of the historical context of the question. You carry out the exercise as assigned or carefully explain the limitations that prevented your completing some parts. (Running out of time isn’t generally considered an adequate limitation).

Support for assertions: You use examples, citations (especially from the required readings), and elaboration to support assertions. You provide evidence that you have read the required background materials.

Clarity: Your answers are clear and show your good understanding of the topic. You see what the module is all about and structure your paper accordingly.

Critical thinking: The paper incorporates your reactions, examples, and applications of the material to business and illustrates your reflective judgment and good understanding of the concepts. It is important to read the “Required Reading” in the Background material plus other sources you find relevant.

Breadth and depth: You provide informed commentary and analysis—simply repeating what your sources say does not constitute an adequate paper. The scope covered in your paper is directly related to the questions of the assignment and the learning outcomes of the module.

Overall quality: You apply the professional language and terminology of systems design and analysis correctly and in context; you are familiar with this language and use it appropriately. Your paper is well written and the references, where needed, are properly cited and listed (refer to the Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper) if you are uncertain about formats or other issues.
