Research Proposal Assignment

For the rest of the semester, you will be focusing on one subject for a final research paper. In order to get started on this, you will write a proposal about your topic.

Goals

Create a complex research question.
Form a research strategy.
Integrate and discuss sources effectively.
Understand MLA conventions and citations.

You are free to choose your topic, but you must run the topic by me. I reserve the right to veto any topic.

Consider using headings to organize your paper. Remember, this is just the beginning of your research journey. A general claim is fine. You should have a specific research question in mind, though, as you write this proposal. Your proposal needs to cover the following:

Introduction: introduction to your topic, an idea of what your claim would be, and its personal experience to you. Use specific examples from your life. Please also include your research question (this can be addressed when you write what your general claim is).

Overview and Areas to be Studied: explain both sides of your topic (remember Rogerian argument). Address what you need to research for this topic (the history, claims and subclaims/warrants that you need to address). What questions do you want to address in this paper? Cite at least 1 source for this.
Research: Have at least 2 credible sources. You will eventually need about 10 sources, so more than 2 sources is fine. Explain why you think these two sources are helpful. Explain what other research you plan on obtaining. What research are you looking for to help your argument?
Questions/Concerns: What concerns do you have about your topic? What problems do you foresee? What questions do you have for me, and what do you want me to give you feedback on?
What do you hope your readers will take away from your argument?

Ethnography: In this essay you will conduct and analyze fieldwork. This entails three steps: conducting fieldwork, writing fieldnotes, then analyzing your data to make claims about the culture you’ve observed. 1) spend several hours observing a cultural group to which you have access (the best way is to be a member of the group); 2) take detailed notes describing everything you observe; 3) use critical tools for ethnographic inquiry (analyze performances, language, rituals, symbols, hierarchies, expressions, etc.)

In your term paper lay out the following elements:
• Introduction: set the scene and state your thesis: What is your main argument? Your analysis should deal with key issues of the course (power, identity, culture)? [1-3 paragraphs]

What is Ethnography?

• Conclusion should summarize main arguments and draw connections, giving reader new insights into your cultural group, as well as the concept/s utilized from class reading and discussion [1-3 paras]

Management of the Singer Company is currently considering the possibility of changing from the FIFO method to the LIFO method of inventory valuation for income tax and financial reporting purposes. The company’s president, Diane Singer, is concerned that using LIFO will tend to distort the company’s balance sheet over time. She believes that the difference between the current cost of the company’s inventory and the reported LIFO valuation will tend to grow larger each year, and that the company’s reported LIFO inventory valuation will be progressively understated in relation to current cost. Singer Company relies heavily on short-term bank credit, and Ms. Singer feels that the company’s bankers will tend to downgrade the company’s short-term debt-paying ability if a switch to LIFO is made.

Required:

Discuss the major factors that, over time, will affect the magnitude of the difference between the current cost of the company’s inventory and the reported LIFO amount.

Evaluate the merit of Ms. Singer’s concern that bankers may be misled by the company’s balance sheet if LIFO is used.

Essay 1. Week 2 (Due March 15th)
Arguments made about the economic benefits the development that will affect the local community justify the financing of many sport facilities. During a time of global recession when there is a proven logic for governments to spend their way out of financial trouble, the expenditure on sports facilities and supporting infrastructure can be considered a financial lifeline contributing to bringing the economy out of recession rather than an expensive luxury.
Directions:
1. Given the claimed benefits of investing in sports facilities, find an economic impact analysis or report for a sport facility. (Do not use the ones provided in Module Resources, but those can be used as examples.)
2. Analyze what it is meant by economic impact and what benefits it brings in terms of construction, employment, supply chains, local income, and new events.
3. In addition, explain how to ensure a transparent audit trail of how the economic impact has been derived and what its key drivers are.

Week 2(Note) This is on a discussion, not a paper.
1. Research and present a new technology or methodology specifically being used in a sport facility to make that facility more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
2. Explain how you would prioritize the space allocation of a Division II college athletic facility that houses a physical education department, a college athletic program, a campus recreation program, and a summer camps department. Be sure to properly cite any sources and use APA format.

Justify your political leanings as they relate to Canadian macroeconomic policy in a blog format. Only use topics covered in “Dinner Party Economics” as part of your argument. For example, you may have opinions on the government’s environmental policy but that topic is not covered in “Dinner Party Economics”. (Externalities are a microeconomics topic.)

Using only the macroeconomic topics discussed in Dinner Party Economics, comment on current (or potential) macroeconomic policy from your own political viewpoint (liberal, conservative, left, right, etc.) What is the appropriate role for government policy in promoting growth, employment, price stability, etc. based on your own political beliefs?
