Since you will evaluate your employees in about three months, you have some time to plan and strategize. As a preliminary step to making a recommendation to human resources regarding your plans for the upcoming evaluations, discuss your goals for employee performance appraisals. Compare at least two existing approaches to employee evaluations, including actual appraisal systems, and make a recommendation based on scholarly references.

Assignment 1: The Primary Care Clinic

You are the manager of a new primary care clinic located about twenty five (25) miles outside of a small city (population of 50,000). With five (5) family physicians, two (2) nurse practitioners, two (2) physicians’ assistants (PAs), and twenty (20) clinical support staff consisting of RNs, LPNs, and CMAs, the clinic provides primary care services to a diverse community of people living and working outside the city limits. Originally a rural area, the community has been growing and now includes promising opportunities in employment, education, and comfortable living spaces for young families. However, there are still many residents who struggle to make ends meet with older farms that have belonged to families for generations.

The central city includes two (2) large acute care facilities, and one (1) tertiary care facility that is known for its excellent pulmonary care. Both acute care hospitals provide the usual services such as labor and delivery, outpatient surgery, chronic diseases care, etc. and have fully equipped ancillary departments, such as lab and radiology. Up until this point, the residents have used the facilities’ emergency departments for routine illnesses and conditions when their private physicians were not readily available.

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

Analyze some of the key social, political, and economic factors that have led to the proliferation of urgent care facilities and primary care practices over the last 20-30 years.
Create a comprehensive mission statement for the clinic, and discuss how it will facilitate the provision of quality services.
Analyze and discuss one (1) or more directions the clinic might take to grow its business. Determine what factors you would consider when deciding what services to provide in-house and which ones to affiliate with other institutions.
Decide how you will determine if the clinic is meeting its goals. Identify three (3) performance measurements you could use to evaluate the success of the clinic’s services. Begin by naming a goal, and then identify a quantifiable measurement you could use for each to determine if you are coming close or falling short of the goal.
Determine how you would then address whatever opportunities for improvement seem to exist and what processes you would put in place.

Staffing practices consist of two general issues—first, identifying and hiring the right people for the job, and second, retaining those individuals and building their competencies as productive employees. These are both areas where management and human resources (HR) need to work together.

The bottom line is that when we are recruiting, screening, and selecting new employees, we should be careful that we are always focused on the primary duties of the job and finding the candidate that will best perform them.

Once we hire the right person, training and development are essential activities. Keep in mind that training may not always be directly job or skill related. The training component is part of retaining quality employees and providing them with growth opportunities. Therefore, management should be encouraged to work with HR in order to identify needs and strategically plan training sessions.

Evaluate the sources of workplace conflict and determine appropriate techniques to resolve them that respect human differences.

Using a search engine of your choice from the Internet, your texts, or the University Library, research several different HR risk management issues.

Cite at least five different HR risk management issues you have identified in your organization or past organization.

Identify the HR risk issues; assess if the risk factor is high, medium, or low; and give an explanation of your risk factor rating.

Present two socially responsible corrective measures you would recommend to eradicate or diffuse the risk.

Using PivotTables to answer questions

Your new knowledge of project management and experience at Roto Air has earned you a promotion to a senior project manager. Roto Air has recently purchased a smaller company that is the current supplier of electro-mechanical assemblies used in the Quick Drop 100. Researchers who investigate the causes of specific health problems look at a wide range of influences on several different levels. For instance, if researchers were investigating obesity at the individual level, they could examine eating habits and frequency of sedentary activities like TV watching. If the health problems also are population wide, as obesity is, it is important from a public health standpoint to focus on community-level factors such as availability of healthy foods and recreational facilities.

Communities and organizations have personalities and can resist change in a manner similar to how individuals can become set in their ways. Have you ever been part of a group where the social norms created pressure to behave a certain way? One possible strategy for changing behaviors is to address a community or organization rather than individuals. For this you would use theories geared to groups rather than to individuals.

The article by Krug et al. in the Learning Resources discusses violence and health and explores how the causes of violence can be viewed at many different levels. Although violence is commonly thought of as happening between individuals, community-level factors may be adding to the problem:

“The third level explores the community context—i.e., schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Risk at this level may be affected by factors such as the existence of a local drug trade, the absence of social networks, and poverty. All these factors have been shown to be important in several types of violence” (Krug et al., 2002, p. 1085).

For this Discussion, consider community level factors that might contribute to injury-related public health problem that is present in a country or a community with these thoughts in mind:
