Discuss WalMart’s entry strategy in different countries

WalMart, the world’s largest retailer, is often cited in the media for its international expansion, outsourcing practices and employee issues. Going into a country making vendors play by their rules in order to sell their company’s products; selling products at the lowest costs by outsourcing to the lowest bidder, has been WalMart’s strategy. But now, is this strategy working?

On the Week 6 Multimedia page you will find several videos about WalMart from PBS’s Frontline Series. View these along with other articles and videos you find and give your opinion on WalMart’s International Strategy. WalMart started its international expansion in 1991 opening a store in Mexico. Use your information to discuss WalMart’s entry strategy in different countries, their successes and their failures.
How is WalMart’s strategy perceived in the international business world?

Throughout this course, you will conduct a strategy audit for a selected company. Begin this assignment by selecting an organization for your course project activities.

In this module, you will assess the product portfolio of your selected business unit by analyzing the value proposition, market position, and competitive advantage of its products and services.

Part I: Interview

To gain an understanding of your selected business unit’s market position, value proposition, and competitive advantage, conduct at least one interview with a mid-level or senior manager.

Use the interview to solicit the manager’s perception of his or her business unit’s product portfolio. Be sure to discuss the points of analysis listed below in Part II of this assignment.

Part II: Analysis

Based on the information gathered from the interview, analyze the product portfolio of your selected business unit. In your analysis, identify the business unit of your company and the product(s) and service(s) on which you will focus.

Make sure to include the following points in your analysis:

  • Describe the target customer for the product/service in terms of relevant characteristics that impact the marketing strategy, including location (how it should be reached) and buying habits.
  • Identify each customer segment’s specific wants and needs. Explain why they buy your company’s product or service, or a competing product or service.
  • Justify how well your product/service satisfies customer wants and needs. Identify any wants and needs that are not met by your product/service.
  • Analyze the position of your product/service in relation to the competition. Identify the main competitors. Explain how your product differs in terms of features, function, quality, price, availability, brand image, and the like. Explain why this differentiation is important to your customers.
  • Describe the source of competitive advantage for your product. Evaluate how sustainable is this source of advantage.
  • Assess the long-term sustainability of the source of differentiation and competitive advantage.

Include appropriate information from the interview in support of your answer.

Part III: Matrix

In comparing your product/service to that of the competition, construct a simple matrix in the following way:

  • List the key customer wants or needs on the left-hand vertical axis.
  • List the competing products on the top horizontal axis, starting with your product/service on the left.
  • For each customer want or need, indicate how well each competing product satisfies the need using a scale of 0–2.
    • 0 = need not met
    • 1 = need partially met
    • 2 = need fully met

This is a simple but effective visual mechanism for comparing the relative position of multiple offerings from competing sources.

Write a 3-page paper in Word format and attach the matrix as an appendix. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

Explain what obligations the U.S. government has towards its citizens and how can these obligations impact individual and group rights?

Original work only, due by Thursday noon:

Prepare: Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read chapters 8, 9, and 10 in American Government and watch the video, Episode II – It’s a Free Country.

Reflect: Our political system is characterized by certain fundamental features to include a system of laws, rights, and liberties. The laws, created and supported by the Constitutional framework, are designed to protect and secure the rights and liberties of individuals and groups throughout the U.S. However, the government also has an obligation to provide for the security of its citizens from serious internal and external threats that could cause grave or severe damage to our country. The need for homeland and national security can create a dilemma where conflicts emerge between these security needs and the demands for civil rights and liberties.

Write: In your initial post, explain what obligations the U.S. government has towards its citizens and how can these obligations impact individual and group rights? Provide real-world examples to support your explanation. Fully respond to all parts of the prompt and write your response in your own words. Your initial response must be 200 to 250 words. Support your position with APA citations to two or more of the assigned resources required for this discussion. Please be sure that you demonstrate understanding of these resources, integrate them into your argument, and cite them properly

State how you plan to acquire the KSAs that you need but do not presently have

Understanding what constitutes a well-done statement of TDRs(Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities)and KSAs (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)It might be useful to look for a professional association’s website to see what they have to offer in terms of knowledge. The knowledge in those websites may be a little broader than those in a specific firm, but they will most likely be very useful.

When looking at many specific firms’ websites, you will almost surely run into many poorly done sets of TDRs and KSAs (Most often, the KSA description is lacking).  Be sure to know what constitutes Knowledge, what is a Skill, and what are underlying Abilities required perform the job. This will help you eliminate poor sources quickly.

Use the web to find a specific organization that has a good statement of TDRs and KSAs for an entry-level job in your occupation. You are looking for a very high quality job description (TDR) and job specification (KSA), and many organizations will not have done them very well. I suspect that on average, you might have to look at 10 to 20 (or more) organizations’ websites before you find a well-done (complete, unambiguous, understandable, detailed) job description and job specification. KEEP LOOKING UNTIL YOU FIND IT, although you may be able to supplement a specific firm’s description with the knowledge requirements you pick up from professional associations.

Things NOT TO DO

DO NOT use a generic job search site like Monster or HotJobs.

Do not use an internship that you have had.

Do not use an informal statement by an old or new boss, a family member or a friend in some existing organization.

You are looking for a high quality, professional job analysis, and nothing short of that will let you do well on this assignment.

You paper should consist of the following points in the following order (PLEASE BE SURE TO FOLLOW THIS ORDER):

  1. Job Title and a short paragraph describing generally what is done on the job, and the name of the organization and its web address for the job.
  2. A list of the TDRs required in this job. They should be through, complete and understandable by somebody outside of your field of expertise. Write this in list form. You may copy (cut and paste) a list from a well-done web site.
  3. A list of the KSAs required to perform the job. These should conform to the definition of KSAs given above, and correspond to the TDR list (These need not be in the same order as TDRs).
    1. If they are well done on the firm’s web site, you may cut and paste the list into your paper. Simply acknowledge the source (web address is fine).
    2.  If you say “Excellent communication skills” or “Excellent computer skills” are required, you are far too general and ambiguous, and you need to find a more specific statement of KSAs for the job.
    3. Saying something like: “Excellent communication skills” or “Excellent computer skills” without adequate explanation of the specific KSAs will result in lowering you grade by at least one letter.
    4. WHILE YOU MUST FIND A SPECIFIC FIRM’S WEBSITE, once you have one you can get help filling in specific KSAs from ONET (http://online.onetcenter.org/). Use our discussion of ONET in class as a guide, and keep in mind that ONET is much broader than a specific job. DO NOT START WITH ONET: Consult ONET after you have found a specific job at a specific firm. Note too that many professional associations have something that looks like certification criteria for entry level or early career positions. Check SHRM for HR; APICS for operations/logistics & IE; CPA exam for accounting; AMA for marketing; NASD for finance, etc. These will be a good deal broader than a specific entry level job, and you will more likely find they cover sets of related entry level/early career jobs in the occupation. This can help you with the KSAs for a specific job.
  4. Do a self-assessment of which KSAs you now have, and which you are lacking (to some degree).
  5. State how you plan to acquire the KSAs that you need but do not presently have. (E.g. take another course; do a special project with a firm,  etc.)
  6. Write a succinct paragraph (150 word maximum) that you will use to describe your KSAs to a prospective employer. What are the most important things you want to tell a prospective employer about yourself, and how will you communicate those points?
  7. MANY organizations say things like “we want self starters who are driven to success and can work well in a team…” Anticipating this, what will you tell them? Much BETTER how will you demonstrate this to them? (“Actions speak louder than words…” my Mom (and possibly yours) would so often say!)

Analyze the connection between these aspects of marketing and strategic planning.

Product Strategy, Pricing, and Distribution

FOR PROFESSOR JANNET ONLY!!!

Application: Product Strategy, Pricing, and Distribution

Marketing information is critical throughout the product life cycle. The marketing function also plays an essential role in determining pricing and distribution for products or services.

Prepare for this Application Assignment as follows:

  • This week’s media segment, “ Strategic Planning in Action: Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland” presents some information on the marketing decisions made for the JointExperience and The Spine Center at that hospital. Consider how the information presented in this media segment relates to the concepts and ideas presented in the course text, as well as last week’s media segment.
  • With this in mind, select a specific health care product or service of interest to you. For instance, you may choose an over the counter medication, medical device, or specialty care within a health care organization. If you would like, you may use the same product or service you selected for the Discussion.
  • Research the product or service you have selected using the Internet and the Walden Library. Analyze your selected example in terms of concepts related to:

    • Product strategy, including the product life cycle and branding (Chapter 8 of Essentials of Health Care Marketing)
    • Price (Chapter 9 of Essentials of Health Care Marketing)
    • Distribution (Chapter 10 of Essentials of Health Care Marketing)

  • Also analyze the connection between these aspects of marketing and strategic planning. Why is it important for these elements of marketing efforts to be tied to a strategic plan?
  • As you formulate your analysis, be sure to include insights from this week’s Discussion, various Learning Resources, and your own research. You should identify at least two journal or news articles that further your understanding of these concepts and how they apply to the product/service you have selected.

Then write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Analyze your selected example of a health care product or service in terms of product strategy (including product life cycle and branding), price, and distribution. Include references to two or more outside resources that further your understanding of these concepts and their application for this product/service. Make note of any information that would be helpful for your analysis but is not available.
